Igrot Kodesh · Letter 546 — 613 Mitzvot and Laws of Niddah — Scholarly Review
Volume 3 · Letter 142
By the grace of Hashem,
24 Mar'Cheshvan 5710,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
an elder who dwells in the tent of study, Rav Y.[1],
I greet you and bless you,
I received your book Mitzvot Hashem* and the pamphlet entitled 'Introduction to the Laws of Niddah*'. I thank you for them. Some of our publications have been sent to you by parcel: a book of Chassidic* discourses by my father-in-law, the Rebbe* shlita*, the Kuntras Limmud HaChassidut*, and the ninth and tenth issues of the Kovetz Lubavitch*.
As in my previous letter[2], I will set forth here a few remarks:
A) At the beginning of your introduction: You note that there are 613 Mitzvot*, and on this matter you should consult the introduction to the Sefer Mitzvot* of Rabbi Saadya Gaon*, written by Rav Perla*, which recalls the texts of the Talmud*, the Midrash*, and the Pesikta* that mention this number, and raises questions about the assertion of Rav I. Ben Bilam and the Tashbetz*, at the end of the Zohar HaRakia*, that this number is not precise.
One may also mention texts from the Zohar* and the Tikkunim* that cite the number 613 or the 248 Positive Commandments and the 365 Prohibitions. I will indicate only a few: the introduction of the Raya Mehemna* in the Zohar* volume 3, page 92b; the Zohar* volume 1, pages 24a, 170b, 253a; and the introduction of the Tikkunei Zohar*.
B) At the beginning of your book: Is there a Mitzvah* to know Hashem or to have faith in Him? The Rambam*, in his Mishneh Torah*, written after the Sefer HaMitzvot*, speaks of knowing Him. Consult the Sefer HaMitzvot* published in New York a few years ago, which explains that in the Arabic manuscript, the Rambam* speaks of knowing and not of believing.
See also the Kuntras Limmud HaChassidut*, from chapter 10 onward.
C) At the same reference: Should the Precept 'I am Hashem your Hashem'[4] be counted among the Mitzvot*?
Consult the Mitzvah* of faith in Hashem in the Sefer HaMitzvot* of the Tzemach Tzedek*.
D) In the second paragraph: Are non-Jews prohibited from associating other forces with that of Hashem? See the Mitzvah* of the unity of Hashem in the Sefer HaMitzvot* of the Tzemach Tzedek*.
Those who hold there is no prohibition for them: Ramah*, Orach Chaim*, end of chapter 156; Tosafot* on tractates Bechorot* 2b and Sanhedrin* 63b; Rabbeinu Nissim*, at the end of the first chapter of tractate Avodah Zarah*.
In contrast, according to the responsa Veshav HaKohen*, chapter 38 and Shaar Efraim*, chapter 24, this belief is indeed prohibited to them.
E) You mention the resurrection of the dead, and the Kovetz Lubavitch*, which was sent to you, explains it in detail, with references[5].
F) At the end of your book: You mention the Torah* prohibition against causing suffering to animals.
The view of the Rambam* can be established from the Guide for the Perplexed*, volume 3, chapter 17. He holds that it is indeed a Torah* prohibition, based on the verse (Numbers 22:32): 'Why have you struck your donkey?' Commenting on this verse, Rabbi Yochanan says the same in the Midrash HaGadol*.
G) At the beginning of the introduction to the laws of Niddah*: A note cites the Tikkunei Zohar*, which speaks of sixty orders of the Mishnah*[6]. The Gaon of Vilna* rectifies this text and speaks instead of sixty tractates. And these sixty orders divide into six hundred and into six hundred thousand.
Here, in my humble opinion, is the explanation. Every level connected to holiness can be divided into ten levels, which in turn are subdivided into ten. The primary source is the Vav*[7], which contains within it the Yod*[8], subdividing down to six hundred thousand.
This number of six hundred thousand is chosen because Mishnah* is an anagram of Neshamah* (soul), according to the Taamei HaMitzvot* of Rabbi Chaim Vital*, in Parashat Va'etchanan*, and there are six hundred thousand souls.
I conclude by sending you my blessing and wishing you all the best,
M. Schneerson,
