Igrot Kodesh · Letter 542 — Religious Education Leadership in Israel

By the grace of Hashem,

9 Mar'Cheshvan 5710,

To my close relative, the great Rav,

distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav A.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I received your letter, though with a slight delay.

I presented the contents of your correspondence to my father-in-law, the Rebbe* shlita*, regarding my cousin[2]. He will attend to this in the coming days and will make contact with Rav Burak.

As for the need to write to the person you indicate to me, I do not know what to say.

Concerning religious education, my father-in-law, the Rebbe* shlita*, considers that one can rely only on those who observe the Torah* and the Mitzvot*. They alone are capable of expressing their opinion in this matter.

To which institution or to which department should this problem be entrusted? According to the Rebbe*, everything depends on that institution, its manner of working, its goal, its actual leadership. Must this position be communicated to others and accompanied by requirements? In fact, one must also determine, to the greatest extent possible, what form this leadership will take tomorrow.

What could I say about the center for religious education? At the beginning of Tishrei* 5710, you were in charge of it, and you were able to allocate a grant from its budget for the teaching of Rav Goldschmidt. But what is the objective of this center? Does it depend on a party? Who decides on its activities? I know nothing of all this — and so what can I say?

Furthermore, all of this takes place in the Holy Land* and in 5710, that is, in a place and a time of confusion of values — especially spiritual values — on the part of the religious majority.

Consequently, if the question posed in your letter is still relevant, I propose that you address yourself directly to my father-in-law, the Rebbe* shlita*, describe the situation to him exactly, tell him about this center, and define for him the letter you wish him to write. I am convinced that in my place, you would have taken the same position, and you will therefore not hold it against me.

מכתבו באיחור זמן קצת קבלתי.

הצעתי לפני כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א תוכן מכתבו בהנוגע לב"א בת דודי תי' וימים אלו ישתדל בזה גם יבוא בקישור עם הרב בוראק.

בענין הכתיבה למר... לא ידעתי מה אדון בזה.

השקפת כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש בשאלת החנוך הדתי בכלל ושאין נאמנים ע"ז אלא אלו שהם שומרי תומ"צ ושרק להם הרשות לחוות דעת בזה וכו' וכו' ידועה... הן מדברים שבע"פ והן מבכתב זה מכבר ומה יוסיף עוד מכתב אחר.

השקפתו ביחס לאיזה מוסד או משרד בפרט ה"ה תלוי בהידיעה ע"ד אופי מוסד זה אופן עבודתו ומטרתה ההנהלה בפועל והאחראית וכו' ואם להודיע ההשקפה לאחרים ובצירוף תביעות הרי צ"ל בטוח במדה ידועה עכ"פ ג"כ באופי ההנהלה האחראית שתהי' מחר. ומה יכולתי לספר ע"ד המרכז לתרבות דתית שם המוסד אשר בתחלת חדש תשרי ה'תש"י היתה הנהלתו ע"י כת"ר ואשר לע"ע עלתה בידו להקציב סכום מכסף המוסד לשיעורי הרב גאלדשמיד והגורים. אבל מהי מטרת המוסד האם הוא סניף או תח"י שר החינוך או שר דתות מפלגתי או בלתי מפלגתי, למי דעה המחלטת בעניניו פעולותיו ע"ע וכו' עדכ"ז וכיוצא בזה איני יודע מאומה וא"כ מה אוכל להרציא ונוסף עד"ז הנה זמן ומקום ענין הנדון הוא בא"י ובשנת תש"י היינו בזמן ומקום בלבול ערכין וביחוד ערכי הרוח של ההמון הדתיי ובלבול היותר גדול בזמננו אנו.

ולכן הצעתי אם עדיין אקטואלית שאלת המכתב... אשר כת"ר יפנה ישר לכ"ק מו"ח אד"ש יתאר לפניו כל מה שימצא לנחוץ ע"ד אופי מוסד הנ"ל ויבאר נקודת המכתב שמבקש שיכתב... מובטחני שגם הוא במקומי הי' עושה ככה ולכן לא יקפיד ע"ז.
