Igrot Kodesh · Letter 541 — Torah Commentary — Bereishit and Noach

Volume 3 · Letter 137

By the grace of Hashem,

8 Mar'Cheshvan 5710,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

an elder who dwells in the tent of study, Rav Y.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your Torah* commentaries on the Sidrot* Bereishit* and Noach*. As we agreed, we will send you, by parcel, some of our most recent publications, the Sefer* Taamei HaMitzvot* of the Tzemach Tzedek* and issues nos. 69 to 72 of the writings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* shlita*.

I leafed through your books immediately upon receiving them, so keen was my interest, and I will set forth here a few remarks, though they result from a hasty review:

A) At the beginning of your book: You mention the letters of the alphabet which the Tradition writes in large format. You say that the Menorah Shlomo does not adopt the Tradition of Chronicles, and you suggest that he did not have access to the version in our possession. It seems quite clear to me that there are two conceptions of letters written in large format, or even in small format[2]:

1. Such letters appear only in the verses of the Chumash*.

2. They appear in all the books of the Torah*.

These conceptions are linked to the two opinions expressed in tractate Nedarim* 22b. According to the first, the children of Israel, had they not committed the sin[3], would have received only the Chumash* and the book of Yehoshua*. According to the second, they would in any case have received the twenty-four books of the Torah*. On this matter, consult the Iyun Yaakov* on the Ein Yaakov*.

In any case, the book of Yehoshua* does not concern our topic, since all its letters are of normal size. See the Minhat Shai* Yehoshua* 14:11.

B) In the section 'Study of Hashem', paragraph 1: You say that the heavens and the earth were created before everything else, whereas in paragraph 2, you introduce a third element, primordial matter, and you say that time was also created, thereby contradicting your earlier statements.

It is clear that the order of creation is as follows: time, primordial matter, the heavens and the earth. The four fundamental elements of matter[4] were even created before the earth, as the Ramban* points out.

Furthermore, the Ramban* holds that there were two primordial matters, one for the heavens and one for the earth. The Etz Chaim* reproduces his view in the chapter Kitzur Atzilut Beriya Yetzira Asiya, paragraph 10, and you should also consult the Rambam*, Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, chapter 3.

Now, it is difficult to imagine that the initial creation consisted of two elements. One must also reconcile this assertion with that of the Etz Chaim* in the chapter Drushei Atzilut Beriya Yetzira Asiya*, paragraph 1, according to which the Sefirah* of Keter*, the crown above creation, alludes to primordial matter.

But according to another view, there was indeed a single potential for heaven and earth. This may be connected to the discussion in Midrash* Bereishit Rabbah* 12:11, and the Guide for the Perplexed*, volume 2, chapter 26. This point will not be developed here.

C) At the same reference: Time was created, and you raise the well-known objection of our Sages, that time pre-existed. The Sefer HaMitzvot* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in the Mitzvah* of faith in Hashem, chapter 11, provides a satisfactory answer: time which is not yet quantifiable can already be defined as a creation.

D) At the end of the second section: You ask whether non-Jews are obligated to sanctify the Name of Hashem. You will find a lengthy discussion on this subject in the Rimat*, at the end of Parashat* Toledot*, and in the Parashat Derachim*, chapter Derech HaAcherim*, paragraph 2.

E) At the same reference: You ask whether non-Jews are obligated to honor their parents. Consult tractate Menachot* 56b, which speaks of the ten Mitzvot*[5], the seven received by the descendants of Noach*, to which were added the necessity of having a legal system, Shabbat*, and the honoring of parents. One may conclude from this that this commandment does not apply to non-Jews.

You cite the following words of the Midrash*[6]: 'I exempt you from honoring your parents, but I exempt no one else from doing so.' This citation is difficult to understand. Why would someone else be exempt from this Mitzvah*? Should this Precept disappear?

It seems to me that the following explanation may be offered. Hashem exempted Avraham* entirely from his obligation and he therefore did not need to return to Charan*[7] after receiving this command. In contrast, no other person faced with the same situation would be exempt from honoring his father.

By receiving a divine command, he could therefore be punished if he tarried after carrying it out, for he was not definitively released from his obligation toward his parents. It was only suspended momentarily on account of another obligation.

One cannot tiry proof of the obligation of non-Jews toward their parents from this, since the Patriarchs* are the subject here.

Are non-Jews obligated to fulfill a rational commandment? Consult the Sdei Chemed*, Peat HaSadeh*, General Principles, 3:107.

I conclude by wishing you all the best,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

On this matter, Ginsburg, of whom you speak in your introduction, had apostatized and had even, for a time, engaged in missionary activities. I merely wished to bring this to your attention.
