[End of the month of Adar I 5703] [1]

By the grace of Hashem,

To the Chassid, active and discerning, the Rav E. N. [2],

I greet you and bless you,

You ask about chapter 17 of the Tanya*, according to which a wicked person cannot begin to serve Hashem before having first done Teshuvah for his past actions. Does this mean that he is concretely incapable of putting into practice the injunction "turn away from evil and do good"? Or should one understand that his reflection on the greatness of Hashem will not give birth to the feelings that would enable him to put the Mitzvah* in practice, in which case this meditation must be complemented by a feeling of submission to Hashem?

You opt for the second explanation, advancing that in other domains, for example that of commerce, the wicked are capable of conducting a successful reflection. They are therefore susceptible of having an understanding that induces feeling, but are punished by the fact that they remove this possibility from themselves regarding the Torah and Mitzvot*. Moreover, if one claims that they are incapable of accomplishing the least Mitzvah before having attained Teshuvah, their case should not be discussed in this chapter 17 of the Tanya, whose purpose is to explain that it is easy to serve Hashem. It would have been necessary to complete the development on this accessibility of the service of Hashem, then specify afterward that it does not concern the wicked who have not done Teshuvah.

Your words are not very detailed in your letter, but you seem to mean that it must be easy also for the wicked to serve Hashem and that their case is therefore treated in this chapter, but that additional forces must nevertheless be granted to them so that their reflection bears fruit.

I agree that the second explanation is correct, as I will develop, but I think that one can object to your two proofs:

A) The wicked are not masters of themselves and this situation is a punishment because they do not observe the Torah and Mitzvot. The fact that they can have a reasoned attitude in other domains does not intervene here. Indeed, why would they be punished in the commercial domain? Now, if one considers that this punishment is not natural but artificial — which the Tanya does not say — if it becomes for them a second nature, why would it not intervene also in the commercial domain? Thus, one who, through avarice, refuses to give Tzedakah*, will he not have, in his commercial activities, an attitude showing how much he loves money?

B) Who speaks, in this chapter 17, of the additional forces that are granted? Could an idea so important be merely implied in the text, implying that the ease of serving Hashem does not concern the wicked? Is there truly self-evidence here?

Moreover, this chapter underlines that the ascendancy of the intellect over the feelings is the normal functioning of the personality. Then, what is the meaning of the statement of our Sages that "the wicked are dominated by their heart," mentioned in this chapter? Does such an attitude not go against nature? The Tanya therefore explains that it is a punishment.

Therefore, how can the verse say that it is easy to serve Hashem, when the intellect of the wicked does not direct their feelings, even if this is a punishment? The Tanya therefore explains that the verse of the Torah observing the accessibility of the service of Hashem is not said regarding the wicked. For them, it is certainly not easy to serve Hashem. Moreover, they cannot do so before having first attained Teshuvah.

Furthermore, the beginning of chapter 18 shows that the explanation given first has a general character and is then specified subsequently.

* * *

A parenthetical observation can be made concerning what is said here about the wicked. The verse observing that it is easy to serve Hashem can be interpreted in its primary sense, the one indicated in this chapter 17, as well as in Tractate Eruvin* and Midrash Rabba, as relating to the Torah and Mitzvot, to the service of Hashem throughout the year, which must be assumed by loving Him and fearing Him, by being "close" to Him, "with all one's heart," as chapter 17 says, or even "very close" to Him, "with all one's might," as the beginning of chapter 18 explains.

Such a level of the service of Hashem is not accessible to the wicked. Transgressing the Will of Hashem, they are, in effect, lower than the forces of evil themselves [3]. Moreover, through their Mitzvot, they add forces to them, at least temporarily [4]. (...) This is the reason why one can say that their vitality comes from the domain of death [5].

But there is also a second interpretation, according to which this verse speaks more specifically of Teshuvah, which one can also accomplish to be "close" or even "very close" [6]. In such a case, it is quite clear that the verse speaks specifically of the wicked. The lower Teshuvah enables them to be "close," then, through the higher Teshuvah, they become "very close," offering their life for Hashem beyond all rationality. The Chassidic discourses* allow one to confirm these interpretations.

* * *

To return to our subject, can a wicked person, as the Tanya defines him, put into practice the principle "turn away from evil and do good"? It is clear that he has this possibility and one can see the most tangible proof in what happens every day, as well as in the narratives and statements of our Sages.

Not only can the wicked put into practice the Mitzvot for which they do not undergo the attacks of their evil inclination, but moreover, common practice establishes that they can also practice Mitzvot that provoke a battle within them and require deep reflection, without necessarily regretting their past actions. Indeed, can one claim that one who succumbs to his evil inclination will henceforth follow it in every point? The Tanya itself affirms that this is not the case, except when it concerns someone who is punished for having committed particularly grave transgressions.

A commentary on the Tanya, reproduced in few copies and attributed to the Rashag* [7], interprets the expression "truly wicked" by reference to the term wicked found in the first chapter of the Tanya, where it designates one whose bad actions outweigh the good. This explanation is surprising. Does the first chapter not say that this is only a figurative sense, and by no means the literal sense? Can an opposite interpretation be conceivable here?

It seems to me therefore that the "truly wicked" person is one who never experiences remorse. Indeed, the adjective "truly" designates what is always identical and does not change. This is also true for a wicked person, who may also be filled with regret without this being sufficiently strong to lead him to modify his behavior. But this question still requires further examination.

* * *

In any event, whatever the meaning of this expression, it remains necessary to investigate. Indeed, each transgression, which goes against the Will of Hashem, establishes a barrier between man and the Holy One, blessed be He. The one who commits it then receives his vitality from the palaces of impurity and from the place of death. This is so for all wicked people. But perhaps the subjugation to the forces of evil is limited to the moment of the transgression, while afterward, a drawing closer to the divine soul occurs, without any reference to Teshuvah?

Thus, if an obstacle prevents the Torah and Mitzvot accomplished by this man from experiencing elevation, his body and animal soul, on the other hand, do receive it.

It is explained elsewhere that the intellect directs the feelings of the Beinoni*, the intermediate man defined by the Tanya, only insofar as he has first studied the Torah, which establishes peace between the brain and the heart, "in your mouth and in your heart to accomplish it." Therefore, how can one affirm that serving Hashem is very easy for everyone? Precisely because every man must be capable of mastering his reflection and, on its basis, of giving birth to feeling. When he does not succeed, it is concretely a punishment.

An explanation is developed in another text, according to which the Tzaddik* is one who masters his heart, the Beinoni is one whose intellect directs the feeling, and the wicked person is one who is subject to his heart. Thus, the basis of the service of Hashem of the Beinoni is reflection on the greatness of Hashem, which leads to loving Him and fearing Him. However, this man must, first, study the Torah, in order to nourish his reflection, so that it effectively arouses the feeling.

Nevertheless, the affirmation according to which it is easy for the Beinoni to give birth to feeling through reflection is valid only in the general case, for the Torah takes into account the majority. But it is conceivable that such a reflection remains without effect. Moreover, chapter 29 of the Tanya explains that the Beinoni has never committed any transgression, has never been wicked, not even for a single instant. This means, in fact, that in his current state, he no longer has any trace of his past transgressions. Therefore, nothing can incite him to transgress the Will of Hashem.

Conversely, it is quite clear that one who has committed transgressions in the past retains the possibility of becoming a Beinoni. Certainly, this seems to contradict the simple meaning of this affirmation. Nevertheless, the Tanya does say elsewhere that the Beinoni can recall the transgressions he committed and that everyone can, at any moment, become a Beinoni.

* * *

Furthermore, the Tanya does not exclude the eventuality that a "truly wicked" person may sometimes, following a reflection and a battle against his evil inclination, put into practice, in a completely exceptional manner, the Torah and Mitzvot. Therefore, the necessity of prior study is only the general case. An exception remains possible. Or perhaps one must consider that the Torah and Mitzvot of a "truly wicked" person are not acts of the service of Hashem, insofar as they have the effect of strengthening the domain of evil, as long as he has not done Teshuvah.

To complete this letter, I will add some other clarifications on this chapter of Tanya.

Why affirm here that the Torah is eternal? Could one envisage that it be otherwise? In fact, the purpose here is to establish that the ease of serving Hashem was not granted only to the generation that entered Eretz Yisrael*, but that it remains identical at every epoch. For, it would have been necessary to put into practice the Will of Hashem in any event, even at the cost of the greatest difficulties.

Moreover, what is said here of the love of Hashem applies, in the same manner, to fear. It is said, indeed, that a judicious reflection allows one to preserve it in one's heart, throughout the day, in order to put into practice the precept "turn away from evil and do good," to observe the Torah and Mitzvot. Moreover, fear is presented as the first step for everything that is entrusted to man's free will. It is only then that the love of Hashem can be revealed.

It is said that the mind must consent to an intense intellectual effort, every day, for a long moment. Thus can fear be awakened in the heart. How much more so for the love of Hashem. Nevertheless, the Tanya affirms, in this passage, that it is easy for everyone to cultivate this feeling. One may question this.

It is explained elsewhere that the brain insufflates vitality to the heart. It is for this reason that it directs it naturally, allowing man to repel evil. Nevertheless, it masters only the superficial aspect and not the deep content.

With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate deliverance,

M. Schneerson

[Second version of this same letter]

I will begin by answering the last question you pose. You say that the wicked are discussed in this chapter of the Tanya because, thanks to the forces that strengthen their reflection, it is indeed easy for them to serve Hashem.

In my humble opinion, this affirmation is not exact, for where is it discussed in this chapter 17 about these external forces strengthening reflection? Can one imagine that an idea so essential would not be clearly mentioned in the text?

In any event, the ease of serving Hashem does not concern the wicked, as the Tanya clearly affirms in this chapter. Nevertheless, the affirmation concerning the wicked does have its place here and one must understand it in the following manner.

It is said, first of all, that the intellect naturally directs the feelings. Our Sages affirm however that "the wicked are victims of their heart." Is such a situation not against nature, according to what has just been said? The Tanya therefore explains that it is a punishment. But if so, in what way is it easy to serve Hashem? For a wicked person, even if it is for him a punishment and not a natural state, cannot awaken his feelings from his understanding. The text therefore concludes that the service of Hashem of the wicked person is indeed not easy. Moreover, this man cannot engage in it without prior Teshuvah.

In a general manner, chapter 17 describes this situation in its globality, then chapter 18 brings some clarifications to it [8].

* * *

Regarding the question itself that you pose about the Tanya, common practice and numerous narratives of our Sages prove that the wicked can indeed put into practice the precept "turn away from evil and do good."

Not only do they retain the possibility of practicing the Mitzvot for which they are not attacked by their evil inclination, but moreover, they remain capable of great effort, of a struggle against their inclination, of deep reflection, even if they have not yet done Teshuvah for their prior actions.

Indeed, can one claim that a wicked person, victim of his evil inclination in a specific domain, must necessarily listen to it in all other domains? The Tanya itself affirms that this is not so, including in this chapter, which speaks of the "truly wicked" person, punished due to the gravity of his transgressions.

What is a "truly wicked" person? One can deduce it from an earlier explanation in the Tanya, according to which the wicked person is also seized, from time to time, by remorse, which prevents him from committing the gravest transgressions. Consequently, one who never experiences remorse, concretely or at least potentially, is indeed a "truly wicked" person. Or perhaps it is one who regrets what he has done, but not strongly enough to modify his behavior [9]. One may still question this.

Whatever the definition retained for the "truly wicked" person, the question still arises, for each transgression committed, going against His Will, establishes a barrier between man and Hashem. Similarly, the one who commits it then receives his vitality from the domain of evil and from the place of death. It seems therefore, on this basis, that no difference can be made between a "wicked" person and a "truly wicked" person. However, perhaps this is so only at the moment when the "wicked" person commits the transgression. Immediately after that, elevation is open to him and he draws closer to his divine soul. The Tanya does not say that prior Teshuvah is necessary and specifies clearly, elsewhere, "at the precise instant when he commits the transgression" [10].

* * *

Another observation can be made [11]. In this chapter 17, the Tanya explains for whom it is easy to serve Hashem. But it does not exclude that, in an exceptional manner, a "truly wicked" person may, by means of deep reflection, cause evil to retreat. Certainly, it is said here that one must first attain Teshuvah, but this is only a normal situation, which does not exclude that there may be exceptions.

Perhaps the service of Hashem of the "truly wicked" person who has not yet done Teshuvah is not considered as such, having the effect of strengthening the domain of evil.

One can find an illustration of this in this chapter. It says that the intellect of the Beinoni directs his feelings. And this is indeed a normal situation. For he himself may sometimes feel no emotion, even after intense reflection.

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *
