To the young Shlomo Zalman* (see note 1),

To the young Shlomo Zalman HaKohen* (see note 2),

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 20 Teves*, in which you describe your study of Chassidus*, which is developing ever more.

Surely the promise of our Sages will be fulfilled in you — that "to whoever adds (see note 3), more is added (see note 4)." Now, the interest granted by Hashem* exceeds the capital. In the words of the holy Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 152a, this study is called "the soul of the Torah." And every expression of our Torah is particularly precise.

One can observe here below that an addition in the soul is also marked in all the limbs of the body. One can deduce from this that a contribution to the soul of the Torah also manifests in the body of the Torah — in its revealed dimension — whose study will be more fruitful and will enter into the category that our Sages call "meritorious study," or "emanating from the right side," based on Tractate Yoma* 72b and the commentary Rashi* gives on it, or based on Tractate Shabbos* 63a.

These teachings of our Sages also emphasize that by acting in this manner, one adds light and enthusiasm to the practice of the mitzvos* in the finest manner, as it is stated: "Adorn yourself before Him through the mitzvos." This also includes the moral dimension, as Tractate Shabbos 133b states in citing these words.

Commenting on the verse: "You shall love Hashem your Elokim*," our Sages say: "May the Name of Hashem be beloved through you," and the Sifri* adds: "Cause Him to be beloved by all creatures." You will consult chapter 32 of the Tanya*. Surely you are disseminating all of this in your surroundings — first and foremost by setting a good example yourselves.

May Hashem grant that in this domain as well you achieve success.

With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this,

I have duly received your request for a blessing and those that were enclosed with it.
