5 Shevat* 5717
Brooklyn
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 4 Shevat, in which you inform me of the controversy that has been raised in the synagogue where you serve (see note 1), concerning the recitation of Tachanun* (see note 2). This has resulted in shouting, disputes, and even, as you write, public humiliation. You ask me what I think about this.
I am surprised that you ask me about public humiliation. You know what our Sages say about it, and several texts condemn dispute in very clear terms.
Nevertheless, you do tell me that this synagogue is called "Nusach Ari Zal*." Now, the later authorities state (see note 3) that one may transition from the Ashkenaz* rite to the Sefard* rite, or from the latter to the Ari Zal rite. However, one may not abandon the Ari Zal rite for the Ashkenaz rite. You serve in this place and you will therefore endeavor to uphold this principle, in accordance with the ways of the Torah, which are pleasant and peaceful.
May Hashem* grant you success.
You say, at the beginning of your letter, that you are the shamash*, the secretary of this synagogue. Surely you therefore endeavor to put into practice the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek* (see note 4), who once said to a shamash: "He called the sun (shemesh*) and light shone; He called the shamash and light shone" (see note 5).
You must therefore endeavor to illuminate the synagogue through the recitation of Tehillim* and through public Torah classes. May Hashem grant you success in this as well.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
Notes
(1) As secretary, charged with maintaining proper order.
(2) Presumably when there is a difference between the Ashkenaz rite and the Ari Zal rite regarding the necessity of reciting it.
(3) The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "See, in particular, the responsa Divrei Chaim*, vol. 2, Beis HaYotzer*, sections Orach Chaim* and Yoreh Deah*, Minchas Elazar*, vol. 1."
(4) See, on this subject, letter no. 4692.
(5) The word shemesh (sun) can be read, with different vowelization, as shamash (sexton).
