Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 24 Teves*, the date of the hilula* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*:
A) How to convince a student that he must continue his studies at the yeshivah*?
One must, of course, explain to him that our Torah, the Torah of life, is also at the origin of the life of this world. For it was given by the Creator of the world in general and of man in particular. Now, He alone can know what is truly good for man in this world.
In our Torah, the Creator has given us detailed instructions, and one of the most essential consists of studying this Torah. It is particularly important to do so during the period in which one is being formed and preparing for life (see note 1) — to leave the four cubits of one's home, the synagogue, and the house of study.
Several words of encouragement and explanations on this subject can be found in the books, in general, and in those of Chassidus*, in particular.
B) How to chase away foreign thoughts that disturb during prayer and study?
One of the means of achieving this is to have a book placed before you during study, including when one reviews a passage in thought or reflects upon it. This book should be open to the page upon whose content one is meditating, and when one feels that one's thought begins to wander, one should look at the books. The words capture the attention, explain, and illuminate.
C) Disturbing dreams.
Our Sages say that a person sees in them only the reflection of his thoughts. Dreams are the product of the useless thoughts one has had during the course of the day. And if one diminishes the cause, one will also reduce the effect.
However, dreams can also have other causes, as the Tanya explains in chapter 29. Consequently, one must be attentive to the Shema Yisrael* recited at bedtime. One must also have the body in a state of purity, by adopting ritual immersion according to Ezra* (see note 2), and have a proper mezuzah* on the door of one's room.
D) How to strengthen one's faith and trust in Hashem*?
It is by studying Chassidus intensively that you will achieve this.
E) What attitude to adopt toward those who oppose Chassidus?
It is, of course, dreadful to observe that one can oppose a part of the Torah of Hashem. Such an attitude surely results from a lack of knowledge of what Chassidus is. It is therefore preferable not to polemicize, but to spread the light of the Torah and its luminary — which is its inner dimension — to the fullest extent possible.
For this, one must intensify one's own study and exert a positive influence on one's surroundings so that it spreads there. Once again, one must not engage in polemics. In this way, the opposition will diminish while the wisdom and knowledge of Chassidus will grow.
You surely know that on the 10th of this month, the holy Shabbos* Parshas Beshalach*, will be the hilula of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. All those who desire to bind themselves to his instructions and his teachings will motivate themselves and take, on that day, the resolution to increase their study of the Torah and their practice of the mitzvos* in the best manner.
With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this,
P.S.: As you request, and as an exception, I sign this letter myself.
However, know that even when it is signed by the secretary, I read the entirety of the correspondence addressed to me, I dictate the responses myself, and I reread them before they are sent.
I am surprised by the curious suspicion that it could be otherwise. One cannot suspect a Jew of acting in such a manner.
