To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Shalom Mendel* (see note 1), the shochet*,

Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long silence, I have received your letter of 13 Teves, which, however, says nothing to explain this silence.

I read with pleasure that you observed Divine Providence — that it was particularly useful for you to spend the festival of Sukkos* in Montmorency (see note 2). Together with several Chassidim*, you had the opportunity to separate the good grain from the chaff.

Nothing is more important than this, as various texts explain, in particular Tractate Bava Metzia* 85a. And there is no need to elaborate on all this, so evident is it. Fortunate is your portion, as well as that of all the individuals who contributed their participation.

May Hashem grant that the assurance of the Mishnah* be fulfilled in you — that one mitzvah* leads to another. You will ascend from one stage to the next in these actions that draw Jewish hearts close to our Father Who is in Heaven.

It is certain that the One Who gives the Torah and commands the mitzvah will grant you your reward, "measure for measure" (see note 3), but in a greatly increased manner — through deep Chassidic satisfaction from all your children and from your actions meant to bring elevation to the sparks of holiness, that is, precisely to separate the good grain from the chaff, as Chassidus* explains.

I have good hope that you will not content yourself with what has been accomplished until now. In this way, you will have increased success compared to what you have been able to achieve thus far.

I am surprised that you say nothing about the manner in which you took advantage of the propitious days of the month of Kislev* — the 10th (see note 4), the 19th (see note 5), and Chanukah*. Without doubt, you organized events on those dates.

With my blessing to convey good tidings, always and every day, of your communal accomplishments and your personal concerns,

לאחרי שתיקתו הכי ארוכה נתקבל מכתבו מי"ג טבת, אף שגם ממנו אינו מובן סיבת השתיקה.

נעם לי לקרות בו איך שראה השגחה פרטית והתועלת הכי גדולה שהיתה מהיותו בחג הסוכות במאנטמארענסי שעלה בידו ביחד עם איזה מאנ"ש להוציא יקר מזולל וכו' ואין לך דבר גדול מזה וכמבואר בכ"מ, ומובן ג"כ מסוגית הש"ס (ב"מ פה, א) ואין להאריך בדבר הפשוט, ואשרי חלקו ושל כל אלו שהשתתפו בהאמור, ויה"ר שתקוים בהם הבטחת משנה מצוה גוררת מצוה שילכו מחיל אל חיל בפעולות המקרבות לבם של בני ישראל לאבינו שבשמים, ובטוח נותן התורה ומצוה המצות לשלם שכרם במדה כנגד מדה אלא שכ"פ ככה ברוב נחת חסידותי מכל יו"ח שיחיו ובפעולותיהם בבירור הניצוצות בכלל שזהו הענין דלהוציא יקר מזולל, וכמבואר בתורת החסידות כי תקותי חזקה שלא יסתפקו בהנעשה עד עתה ואז יתוסף גם בהצלחה נוסף על ההצלחה דעד עתה.

לפלא שלא כותב איך נצלו ימי הסגולה דחדש כסלו יו"ד י"ט כסלו וימי חנוכה שבודאי עשו בהנ"ל בימי סגולה אלו.
