To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen* (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter, with its contents, this morning, before going to the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with the custom of these recent months. There, I mentioned your name and those of the members of your family, according to the content of your letter (see note 2).

You inform me that your birthday will be on 5 Shevat*, which approaches, and you will consult, in this regard, the Tosafos* on Tractate Bava Metzia* 106b. May Hashem grant that your mazal* be strong, and in this regard, you know how Chassidus* interprets the statement that "there is no mazal for Israel."

May you have a year of success, in particular in your role as "master of the place" (see note 3), so that this mastery is marked upon the entire place through the strengthening of Yiddishkeit*, its dissemination in that place — in particular that of the wellsprings (see note 4).

Tractate Sanhedrin* 98a states: "We have come on this day," and the mitzvah* of this day is, in this case, the dissemination of the wellsprings of the Baal Shem Tov* and of his successor. You know the famous letter (see note 5) describing the elevation of the soul of the Baal Shem Tov (see note 6).

ולהודעתו מיום הולדתו ה' שבט הבע"ל (ולהעיר מתוס' ב"מ ק"ו ע"ב) יה"ר שיגבר מזלו (וידוע הפירוש בתורת הדא"ח, אין - מזל לישראל) ותהי' שנה הבאה שנת הצלחה ובעיקר הענין דמרא דאתרא שרושם המרות יהי' ניכר באתרא ע"י החזקת היהדות והפצתה שם בכלל ובהפצת המעינות ביחוד כי מצות היום, היום אתינא (סנהדרין צ"ח סוף ע"א) הפצת מעינות הבעש"ט וממלא מקומו, וכידוע מאגה"ק אודות עליית הנשמה של הבעש"ט.
