To the young Chassid* who fears Hashem* and bears

a sacred mission, Rav Shmuel Elazar* (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos* Parshas Shemos*, in which you describe the study program of the preparatory class of Yeshivas* Toras Emes* (see note 2), as well as your words of encouragement to the students, to which they surely paid attention.

May Hashem grant that this be a good beginning, which will subsequently develop as much as possible, both quantitatively and qualitatively — that is, in the number of students and in the quality of their studies, in the depth of their conduct.

The merit of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and of his father, the Rebbe* (see note 3), whose merit protects us, assists all those who devote themselves to Toras Emes, who direct their efforts toward this institution. For it is they who founded it, who invested in it their deep and essential energies.

You write to me that when the Gemara* introduces a narrative of the Sages, you take the opportunity to invite the students to the study of Chassidus*. In this regard, you will surely explain to them, in terms they can understand, the concept of a vow, as defined in Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Matos*, and the corresponding discourses of the Derech Mitzvosecha*. If this has not yet been done, several propitious occasions will present themselves for doing so — for example, when you reach the end of a chapter (see note 4).

But of course, these words of encouragement must not replace the study itself, as emphasized by Kuntres Etz HaChaim* (see note 5), which, after explaining at length the necessity of studying Chassidus, demonstrates that one must equally exert effort to comprehend the revealed dimension of the Torah. This is self-evident.

I was pleased by the conclusion of your letter, in which you say that you participate in the activities of the youth of the Chabad* association. Surely you urge all the other members of this organization to recruit soldiers (see note 6). This is not merely a need but a necessity of the hour. And there is no need to elaborate on this idea, so evident is it.

With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this,
