Greetings and blessings,

You ask me about the haircut of your son (see note 1), may Hashem* grant him long life. This haircut is to take place in winter, and you are concerned that the sudden change from long hair to a short cut might cause him to catch cold, which Heaven* forbid. You are therefore considering postponing the date.

In my opinion, this is not advisable. In a well-known formulation, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, stated that this haircut, at three years of age, reveals an increased holiness within the soul of the child, once he retains his peyos* (see note 2). Consequently, why delay such a revelation (see note 3)?

Furthermore, it is not obligatory to give a very short cut, and the child may retain relatively long hair, provided that the peyos are discernible.

May Hashem grant you and your wife success in educating him to Torah, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds, in good health and with breadth of spirit.

בשאלתו אודות התספורת של בנם שליט"א שכיון שחל בימי החורף יש חחש שהשינוי הפתאומי מריבוי שער לתספורת מדוייקת עלולה לגרום הצטננות ח"ו וכו' שלכן קס"ד לאחר איזה זמן.

והנה לדעתי לא נכון הדבר, כי מלשון הידוע של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בהנוגע לתספורת דג' שנים משמע שיש בזה המשכת קדושה תוספת קדושה בנשמת הילד ע"י הנחת הפיאות וכו' ולמה יאחרו המשכה זו, אבל לאידך גיסא אין כל הכרח לתספורת מדוייקת ויכול להניח שערות גדולות לפ"ע ובלבד שיהי' ניכר הענין הנחת הפיאות והשי"ת יצליחו ואת זוגתו שיחיו לגדלו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים מתוך ביראות הנכונה והרחבת הדעת.
