To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letters of 12 and 17 Teves, in which you mention some difficulties you encounter in your work, particularly for the Beis Rivka*. Remember, then, all those that existed in the country where you were previously (see note 2) and that you overcame successfully. Indeed, the words of the verse from the weekly Torah portion (see note 3) were fulfilled in this regard: "With our young and our old, our sons and our daughters."

In that case, what do the current difficulties matter? Granted, sometimes the test of opulence and abundance is harder than the opposite one (see note 4). Nevertheless, by reflecting on all of this, you will find within yourself the ardor that will enable you to overcome the obstacles, with joy and with a strong conviction that you will be victorious on every point.

In the meantime, you have surely received my letter, which responded to your previous correspondence.

Concerning the woman to whom you allude, one must take into account the fact that if she works in the Chabad* institutions (see note 5), she will not only be doing something positive. She will also cease work that could compete with what is being done.

Now, competition can take different forms. Of course, one cannot renounce essential principles (see note 6). Nevertheless, everything can be expressed diplomatically. One must manifest the appropriate firmness while speaking pleasantly.

In any case, one must not create tension. Quite the contrary, you should foster a pleasant atmosphere, without, however, renouncing the deep dimension and the important points.

May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of your communal accomplishments and personal achievements.

With my blessing, and greetings to all the Chassidim*,

N.B.: You will surely take advantage of the day of the hilula* (see note 7), Yud Shevat* (10 Shevat), which is approaching, to develop the holy institutions of Lubavitch* in your city.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתביו מי"ב וי"ז טבת, בו כותב אודות הקישוים השונים שבהעבודה ובפרט בענין הבית רבקה, ובודאי כשיזכור על הקישוים שהיו במדינתו לפנים אשר בכ"ז התגברו עליהם ובהצלחה, שהרי נתקיים בהם כלשון הכתוב בפרשת השבוע בנערנו ובזקננו בבנינו ובבנותינו גו' במה נחשב הקישוים דעתה ואף שלפעמים הנסיון בקו העושר והמרחב גדול יותר מאשר בקו ההפכי, הנה ההתבוננות הנ"ל מוסיפה אומץ להתגבר על הקישוים מתוך שמחה ובטחון חזק לנצחון בכל הפרטים.

בטח בינתים קבל מכתבי מענה על מכתביו הקודמים.

מ"ש אודות... יש להביא בחשבון שזה שתעבוד בכרם חב"ד יש בזה לא רק הענין דועשה טוב אלא גם שלילה שלא תעבוד באופן דהתחרות (קאנקורענץ) והרי כמה צורות ואופנים בהתחרות, ואף שמובן שאי אפשר לוותר על ענינים עיקרים הרי לכל דבר יש לתת צורה דיפלומטית, זאת אומרת בתוקף הדרוש, אלא שבדברי נועם... אלא שבכ"ז אין כדאי למתוח הנים (אנציהען די סטרונע) ואדרבה להוסיף בהצורה שתהי' נעימה ולא לוותר על הפנימית והענינים שיש להם חשיבות, והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב בענינים הכללים ובעניניו הפרטים.
