Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 16 Teves (see note 1).

It would be good for you and your wife, independently of one another, to give to tzedakah* an amount of eighteen Guidolim* (see note 2) of Poland, multiplied by forty. The equivalent in current currency is specified in my letter (see note 3), which was published in the Kovetz Lubavitch*, volume 8.

This means that you will give to tzedakah, from time to time, until you have reached this amount, both of you. You will also consult Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 21, and the Chassidic discourse of the Tzemach Tzedek*, based on the statement of our Sages that "every penny adds to the others to..." (see note 4).

May Hashem grant you the success of leading all your children to Torah, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds, with breadth of spirit, in good health, and in moral tranquility.

(1) In which the addressee asked the Rebbe for a means of rectifying his transgression, having inadvertently had relations with his wife when she was in a state of niddah*. See, on this subject, letter no. 5292.

(2) An old coin mentioned by the Alter Rebbe* in Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, regarding the amount to be given to tzedakah to rectify a transgression.

(3) This refers to letter no. 199.

(4) Constitute a significant amount.
