To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Tzvi (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 12 Teves, in which you describe the Chassidic farbrengen* of the luminous day of Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 2), the day of our redemption and the liberation of our souls, although it was very reduced, in your expression, due to the situation (see note 3).

I have already expressed my surprise to the Chassidim of the Holy Land (see note 4), who do not see the contradiction (see note 5). For, quite the contrary, this situation demands an increased dissemination of the wellsprings* (see note 6). And the Chassidic farbrengens are part of this program.

It is known, indeed, that when "the other side" (sitra achra*) prospers, the realm of holiness must have greatly increased forces. Practice proves this. The authorities of this world, in such a situation, conscript new people into the army, including those who, until then, had entirely different occupations. Due to the needs, "the weak shall say: I am mighty." You understand what this means, and it is regrettable that this self-evident truth must be pointed out to you by someone on another continent.

May Hashem grant that at least in the future, in peace and joy, kindness and mercy, you redouble your ardor in all aspects of the dissemination of the wellsprings, as indicated by the days of Chanukah* which have just passed, during which one adds, each day, a candle, a light emanating from pure oil, "from sunset," "at the door of his house, toward the outside."

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מי"ב טבת, בו כותב אודות ההתועדות דיום הבהיר י"ט כסלו גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו, אף שכלשונו היתה מצומצמת במאד בחלקה מטעם המצב וכו'.

וכבר כתבתי לאנ"ש באה"ק ת"ו שלפלא שאינם רואים הסתירה, כי אדרבה, המצב דורש הוספה בעניני הפצת המעינות שגם ההתועדויות חלק מהתכנית בזה, וכידוע שכשנתוסף בהלעו"ז ח"ו צריך זה לעורר תוספת כח בצד הקדושה ביותר וביותר, וכנראה במוחש, ורואים את זה במלכותא דארעא שבמצב כזה מגייסים אנשים נוספים ואפילו מאותן הדרגות שעד עתה עסקו בענינים אחרים לגמרי בכ"ז מפני דרישת השעה החלש יאמר גבור אני, והנמשל מובן, וחבל שגם על ענינים פשוטים כאלה צריך לעורר מעבר לים. ויה"ר שעכ"פ מכאן ולהבא ומתוך שלום ושמחה ובחסד וברחמים יוסיפו אומץ בהפצת המעינות בכל פרטיהם, וכהוראת ימי חנוכה דאזלינן מנייהו שמוסיף והולך מיום ליום בנר ואור הבא משמן טהור משתשקע החמה ועל פתח ביתו מבחוץ.
