To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Dovid (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter from Chanukah* and the one that preceded it. Of course, I am sorry that you have made efforts to find a suitable doctor for Kfar Chabad* (see note 2) and that it seems to you that this has served no purpose. Nevertheless, you write that these efforts were completely useless and I cannot agree with this assertion.

Indeed, you raised the question and your letters, which are still at the Kfar, continue to do so even now, including those for which you have not received a reply. In the end, they will bear fruit. You know, in this regard, the analogy of seeds that are planted in the earth (see note 3). Only a small portion of them will germinate. But if one plants precisely that number of seeds, those that germinate will be even fewer.

When it comes to planting — that is, permitted actions — one can say that the seeds that did not germinate were useless, although their presence was indispensable, as has been shown. In the realm of holiness and mitzvah*, however, every action has an effect — not only a specific one, in its own domain, but also a global one, intensifying the light in the entire world and multiplying it.

And a little light suffices to repel much darkness. Moreover, one thereby gives pleasure to our Father Who is in Heaven, Creator of the world, Who directs it and Who said that "you shall love your fellow as yourself" is "a great principle of the Torah."

I am enclosing an excerpt from one of my letters, which will surely interest you. Similarly, the Chassidic discourse entitled "Mayim Rabbim*" (see note 4) has been sent to you under separate cover, but I have good hope that you have already seen and read it.

I send you my blessing of good health. You say nothing about this and I deduce from this that you have recovered. Please also give me good tidings of your communal endeavors and personal accomplishments.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מחנוכה והקודמו, ומובן שמצטער אני על אשר עמל בענין רופא המתאים בעד כפר חב"ד ונדמה שלא הי' תועלת בהשתדלותו, אבל מה שכותב שכל עמל שלו הי' לחנם, מובן שאינני מסכים לזה, כיון שעי"ז עורר אותם ומכתביו שלו הנמצאים בכפר מעוררים אותם גם עתה אף אלו שלא כתבו מענה אליו, וסו"ס יביאו הפירות, וכידוע הדוגמא מזריעה שנקלט בקרקע ומצמיח רק אחוז מסוים מגרעינים הנזרקים, אבל באם יזרקו רק מספר הגרעינים אלו, תהי' הזריעה פחותה כמה פעמים ככה, והנה בהנוגע לזריעה, במלות אחרות בהנוגע לעניני הרשות יש מקום לומר שהגרעינים שלא נקלטו ענינים מצד עצמם הי' לחנם אף שמוכרחים היו גם הם כנ"ל, נוסף על זה בעניני קדושה ומצוה שכל פעולה ופעולה מביאה תועלת ולא רק תועלת פרטית בענינה אלא גם תועלת כללית בהגדלת האור בעולם כולו ולהוספה שאפילו מעט אור דוחה הרבה חשך נוסף על הנחת רוח שנגרם על ידי זה לאבינו שבשמים בורא עולם ומנהיגו אשר הוא שאמר שואהבת לרעך כמוך הוא כלל גדול בתורה...
