Igrot Kodesh · Letter 505 — The Jewish Mission and Preparation for Divine Service

Volume 3 · Letter 101

By the grace of Hashem,

20 Tammuz* 5709,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

the Rav ...,

I greet and bless you,

I have just received your letter of 3 Sivan*, sent by regular mail, and I am replying to it. You do not say which of our publications you wish to receive. You should therefore address our representative, Rav Avraham Pariz, who has several books and pamphlets that we have published. You may consult our catalog with him, inform us of what he does not have, and we will send it to you.

Since you wrote me a letter, I would like to take this opportunity to do the same in return.

You have surely consulted the text of discourses defining Chassidus*. Now, every event that occurs in the world must deliver a lesson for the service of Hashem, which comprises two aspects: duties toward Him and duties toward others.

In fact, pure faith establishes that it must be so, but Chassidus* particularly emphasizes this idea. Thus, a person believes that:

1. Hashem is the Creator and sole Ruler of the world,

2. Hashem is the perfection of good and knows no lack,

3. an action without intention is the manifestation of unconsciousness, which is, of course, inconceivable for Hashem,

4. no distinction can, of course, be made at this stage between the action itself and its conditions, that is, its time and place.

From all of this it follows that a person, endowed with free will, who sees an event, hears about it, or becomes aware of it, is directly affected by it. He can make use of it to attain elevation, thereby drawing closer to the Master of the world, which is the only true progress. When this is indeed the case, he has succeeded in deciphering the divine message.

If this is not the case, not only does he waste the strengths granted to him, but, what is more, he causes a deficiency in creation, for a force introduced into it has remained, through his fault, unused.

If this is so for a particular event, how much more is it the case for the primary mission entrusted to a person, in which he invests his strengths, his energy, and his time.

Various lessons for the service of Hashem can be drawn from being a pharmacist. I will develop two of them here:

A) As soon as one enters a good pharmacy, one can see a large number of medications and products that strengthen and heal various ailments, including the most serious ones. Anyone who sees this and understands what it is about is, rightfully, impressed.

But the pharmacist will explain — and above all explain to himself — that this is only a preparation, a preliminary phase toward healing the patient. To achieve it, two essential conditions must be met:

1. A specialist must prescribe a specific treatment capable of treating the illness. But this is not yet sufficient:

2. The patient must follow the treatment.

What lesson can be drawn from this for the service of Hashem?

Every Jew* is an emissary of the King, King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He*, and a portion of the world is entrusted to him, which he must transform and 'heal.' The elements and 'medications' necessary are made available to him, but all of this is only a preparation. He must still consult a specialist to know which elements to use in order to transform the portion entrusted to him, and then his own person — today, tomorrow, and thereafter. If this is not the case, he may cause danger instead of transforming, destroy instead of building.

Some say: 'All members of the assembly are holy and I myself am one of them. I will therefore personally consult the Shulchan Aruch* and I will know what must be done, for myself as well as regarding the mission entrusted to me in the world.'

An illustration will help understand what follows from such a conception. A person who has learned to read buys medical books, medical instruments, and begins to heal the sick.

The essential — that is, concrete action — comes next. For even the learned man, respecting the specialist physician, possessing medications he can use in accordance with his prescriptions, will never be healed if he does not actually take those medications.

Certainly, he may justify himself in various ways — say that the moment is not right, that the place is not suitable, that he does not have sufficient influence. But all of this pertains only to reward or punishment, allows one to determine whether he acted knowingly, inadvertently, or whether he could not do otherwise — in which case nothing can be held against him. But in any event, the illness retains all its strength.

Now, without a shadow of a doubt, the ultimate goal is to obtain healing. One must conclude that his argumentation misleads him and that he is a victim of his evil inclination*.

B) Upon entering the shop, one may notice a shelf on which there are lethal products, with a sign advising caution. Now, what are lethal products doing in a space of healing and medication? Anyone who knows about all of this knows that what can be lethal for a healthy person, under ordinary conditions, in an ordinary quantity, can also become the only means of saving a sick person, under exceptional conditions, in a very small quantity.

What lesson can be drawn from this for the service of Hashem?

Let us cite an example in social relations. The Torah* is a Torah of kindness; all its ways are pleasant and peaceful. The Mitzvah* exists in any case. If one is invited to a friend's home where the Kashrut* is doubtful, one cannot eat there, even though it may result, as far as he is concerned, in public humiliation. If this person smokes on Shabbat* and there is a possibility of preventing him, by speaking to him several times and by admonishing him, one is obligated to do so.

If one sees a group of educators raising the children entrusted to them — particularly in the pedagogical domain — without making reference to faith in Hashem, His Torah*, and His Mitzvot*, one has the obligation to prevent such a situation by all means, to make them know that, even if they momentarily protect the bodies of their students, they are nonetheless leading them to perdition. Now, in case of danger, it is a Mitzvah* to remove children from them, even forcefully.

By one's intellect, one might be astonished. I am a well-educated person and Halacha* itself states that proper conduct precedes Torah*. How could I adopt such behavior? How could I turn children away in violation of the laws of this country? How could I protest against someone's Shabbat* transgressions and inflict public humiliation upon him?

The answer is as follows. What is a lethal poison for healthy people can become the only means of saving the life of a sick person who is in danger.

A subtle application of this can also be found in the relationship with Hashem. Some complain about Chassidim* who, for a long period, study Chassidus* before praying, then meditate and thus delay the moment of reciting Shema Yisrael* and saying the prayer.

The answer to this objection is as follows. Such an attitude would be dangerous for a healthy person. In other cases, however, it is the only one that can be adopted. Without acting in this way, a person prays mechanically, without investing his heart. His prayer will therefore be futile and improper, as stated by the Rambam* in his laws of prayer 4, 15, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken* Orach Chaim*, chapter 98, and the Kuntres Acharon* of the Tanya*.

But, as in this illustration, one must be particularly careful. One must, of course, not exceed the dose prescribed by a specialist physician.

My letter has been longer than planned and I conclude it by wishing you all good.

If an idea just developed does not receive your agreement, I thank you for writing to me and for presenting your arguments.
