and devotes himself to communal needs,

of manifold accomplishments, Rav Shimon (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have had the pleasure of receiving news of you through the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, full of eagerness, Rav Dov Baumgarten (see note 2).

As you request, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, of blessed memory, in accordance with the content of your letter (see note 3). May Hashem grant that you convey good tidings to me regarding this matter (see note 4).

You tell me that you have business dealings with a bank which, according to common practice, holds deposits from both Jews and non-Jews. And the loan it grants you is with interest. You therefore ask me about this matter (see note 5).

Various sefarim* deal with this question and some are referenced below (see note 6). The halachah* reaches the following conclusion: such a transaction is permitted, without the slightest doubt.

Please convey my greetings to all the members of Shuva Yisrael* (see note 7). They themselves and the members of their families will receive the blessings of the Creator of the world, Who directs it, in all their needs.

I thank you very much for your gift, the sefarim* that were sent to me by the young man Aharon Tawil.

ובשאלתו - אשר יש להם עסק עם באנק שכמנהג כל הבאנקין נמצא בו כסף של יהודים ואינם יהודים להבדיל, וכשלוקחים מהם שטרות הלואה צריכים לשלם בעד זה איזה אחוזים.

כבר מדובר בזה בכמה ספרים ואחדים מהם נסמנו למטה בשולי הגליון* וההלכה והמסקנא שמתירים העסק בלי פקפוק.
