Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the eve of Thursday:
A) You ask at what moment the tzedakah* to which I referred in my letter (see note 1) should be given.
It should be given before the prayer, as our Sages say in tractate Baba Basra* 10a, which is retained as halachah* by the Shulchan Aruch*.
B) I described the importance of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, which are compared to tefillin*. You ask me what this comparison contributes.
You know what one must think about when wearing the tefillin* and what their purpose is, as specified by the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 25, paragraph 5. They serve to subjugate one's mind, located in the brain, and one's heart... (see note 2).
You will consult this text, as well as chapter 41 of the Tanya*, stating that such is the purpose of man. In the words of the Zohar*: "The brain and the heart are the rulers of the body."
C) Reflection on Divine Providence is positive at all times, as stated at the beginning of the Tur* and at the beginning of the Ramah*, in the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*: "I have placed Hashem before me constantly. This is a great principle..." You will consult this text.
I mentioned all of this in the letter addressed to you, but I did not mean that you should have this thought constantly. Indeed, this is impossible — for example, during study time, when one must concentrate on the passage or the halachah* being learned, as the Tanya* explains at the end of chapter 41.
In fact, I meant that you should thoroughly understand this idea and engrave it in your mind. In this way, even when you are not thinking about it, it will be present in your memory, as explained in the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of Parshas Kedoshim*. You will also consult the addenda to Likkutei Torah*, section Vayikra*, page 53c, at the beginning of chapter 5.
And this will diminish the thoughts that disturb you, for they are contrary to logic and to the fruit of reflection on Divine Providence.
D) You mention a yeshivah* student who... (see note 3). The best remedy is not to think about it.
Several halachos* of the revealed dimension of the Torah* establish that not thinking about an idea does not consist of fighting against it, of weighing the pros and cons. In the most literal sense, one must simply stop thinking about it by devoting oneself to something else, in particular to our Torah*, which is called the Torah* of light. For a little light suffices to dispel much darkness.
E) You make reference to Yom Kippur*.
You will consult, on this subject, the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Gate of Addenda, second part, chapter 62.
May Hashem grant that you fix your study of Chassidus*, one of whose fundamental principles establishes that the service of Hashem must necessarily be joyful, as the Rambam* rules at the end of the laws of the lulav*, which you will consult.
With my blessing to give good news of all this,
On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
