To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Chaim Zusha (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*. Naturally, I am pained that there was no chassidic* gathering on this Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 2) at Kfar Chabad* (see note 3). Even if the question was solely related to the number of invitees (see note 4), one can nevertheless observe in practice that a quantitative deficiency leads, in general, to a qualitative deficiency — especially when it involves a propitious day, in this case the Rosh Hashanah* of Chassidus* and the chassidic* ways. This is self-evident.

Moreover, you write that from a technical standpoint, the organization was perfect. There was a book dissemination stand and a place for refreshments. One could therefore have taken advantage of the time the visitors spent at the Kfar to organize certain activities, beyond what took place in previous years.

You say there was also a deficiency in Lod*, and I very much fear that this is the common denominator of all the activities organized by the young people of the Chabad* association, in Tel Aviv and at the Kfar, which are all characterized by their weakness in this domain.

All specific aspects follow the general rule, and it is therefore in this rule and in its direction that the deficiencies must be corrected. This must be done as quickly as possible, as deeply as possible, for even with everything that one could add and modify, it is not yet certain that the needs of the moment will be met.

Is it possible that no effort is made for our holy Torah*, with the self-sacrifice and devotion that are necessary, as is indeed done by all who devote themselves to vain matters? Why do days, weeks, months pass uselessly, or in any case without using them as much as one could?

May Hashem grant that each person, among all of Yisrael*, finally have the merit of announcing good news, and "there is no good but Torah*" — in particular its inner dimension, "the Tree of Life," which is not a mixture of good and evil but contains only good.

With my blessing to give good news,

M. Schneerson,
