Igrot Kodesh · Letter 503 — Tzimtzum, Kabbalistic Worlds, and Multiple Halachic Responsa

Volume 3 · Letter 99

By the grace of Hashem,

15 Tammuz 5709,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

the Rav ...

I greet you and bless you,

I respond, in order, to the questions posed in your letter:

A) The Likkutei Torah*, volume 2, chapter 7, indicates that some erred in thinking that the Tzimtzum*[1] must be interpreted literally. Were they alluding to the first Tzimtzum*?

It is clear that this is indeed the case. The discussion aimed at establishing whether the Tzimtzum* is to be interpreted literally or not appears at the beginning of the Etz Chaim*, where it is indeed a matter of the first Tzimtzum*. The Yosher Levav*, by Rav Chai Rikki, establishes this clearly, as do other texts. This is also what the Likkutei Torah* indicates.

It should be known that in the text you cite and in Iggeret HaKodesh*, this error is set forth and it is established that the Tzimtzum* should not be interpreted literally. But there is also another error. It has been said that the Tzimtzum* pertained to the Essence of Hashem, which makes no sense, as the Torah Or* indicates at the beginning of Parshat Vayeira*, the Likkutei Torah* at that same reference, the Sefer HaMitzvot* of the Tzemach Tzedek* and other texts as well.

B) If the error concerns the first Tzimtzum*, which occurred before the creation of all the worlds, why does the Admur HaZaken*[2] say: 'Hashem would have withdrawn His Essence from this world'?

This question can be answered in two ways:

1. The one who committed this error thought that the Tzimtzum* had to be interpreted literally because it was, for him, self-evident that the Essence of Hashem had withdrawn from this world. Were it not so, 'Hashem would be found equally among the lowliest and even the most vile of creatures.' The answer of the Admur HaZaken* therefore addresses the basis of this conception.

2. With regard to the other worlds, one might think that after the Tzimtzum*, the Light of Hashem was revealed anew. The questions raised by the Tikkunei Zohar* and the Raya Mehemna*, which we will consider further on, therefore no longer arise. In contrast, the Essence of Hashem cannot be revealed here below, since, according to this conception, it is incompatible with matter.

In the spiritual world of Atzilut*, it is quite evident that the Light of the divine Essence can reappear. But more than that, the same can also be the case in the lower stages of creation. Indeed, a thread of this Light does illuminate the worlds of Beriah*, Yetzirah* and Asiyah*.

C) Is there a connection between what has just been said and chapter 20 of Iggeret HaKodesh*, according to which the reflection of divine Light pierced the curtain*[3]?

On this point, why is it not said here that it 'pierces and illuminates,' in the feminine[4]? Yet this is what appears in all the editions I have been able to see.

In my humble opinion, this has nothing to do with what has been explained. For the Admur HaZaken*, the Tzimtzum* is not to be interpreted literally and it is therefore not necessary to compensate for it with this reflection of Light. Moreover, all agree that this reflection does not eliminate the Tzimtzum* and only modifies certain of its aspects, making it possible to conceal it through the fulfillment of Torah* and Mitzvot*.

Chassidus* states the definition of the Tzimtzum* and the thread of Light. This retraction created an empty and round space, into which the thread entered. Now, it is quite clear that a thread cannot fill a round space. And it is the same here. This thread illuminates the world of Atzilut* and only its lights and its vessels unite with it, which is not the case with the palaces and the angels of that world, as chapter 20 of Iggeret HaKodesh* states. It is not the same before the Tzimtzum*, that is quite evident.

D) Can one say that, according to the Etz Chaim*, the thread of Light stops in the world of Atzilut*, the subsequent stages of creation being thus separated from it?

You will consult, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled 'sound [the shofar*],' which was delivered in 5650[5], a note which is near its beginning. This note, citing the Etz Chaim* and the Sha'ar HaHakdamot*, specifies that the essence of the Sefirot* of the world of Atzilut* is the source of those of Beriah*. One may consider that this is what Iggeret HaKodesh* says, evoking the reflection of Light that passes through the curtain.

There is therefore no new idea introduced by the Admur HaZaken* in this. Perhaps his words can be considered an interpretation of the Etz Chaim*, since other interpretations are possible.

In any case, even if one sets aside this ray of light that passes through the curtain, it is difficult to consider the worlds of Beriah*, Yetzirah* and Asiyah* as separate. For this reflection passes through the entire chain of worlds, as Iggeret HaKodesh* states at the same reference.

The reflection thus reaches the Attribute of Kingship of the world of Asiyah*, as the Etz Chaim* and other references specify. Iggeret HaKodesh* also refers to the Sefer HaGilgulim*, which describes its revelation. All of this is clarified by the discourse entitled 'you shall rejoice,' which was delivered in 5657[6], indicating that the reflection is evident in Atzilut*, then hidden in the subsequent stages of creation.

E) Must an orphan begin to put on Tefillin* at twelve years of age?

I have seen that the most recent Sages mentioned this custom. The Pinot HaBayit*, by Rav T. Y. Michaelsohn, says that it is the current usage and that there is, in this, a merit for the deceased. Indeed, one may ask wherein lies the merit of adopting a practice to which one is not obligated and which does not even form part of the education the child must receive, unlike the Kaddish*. Moreover, adults hear the Kaddish*, respond Amen, observe that the child submits to divine judgment. It is difficult to respond to all these questions.

It is also advanced that few people concern themselves with such a child, that in any case one of those who should have done so is no longer present and that it is therefore necessary to teach him earlier how one must put on Tefillin*. Nevertheless, one cannot consider that such instruction is difficult, justifying great effort.

In fact, Tefillin* are put on at twelve years in this case, based on the opinion of the Pri Megadim*. And the Pinot HaBayit* finds an allusion to this in the tractate Gittin* 52a, according to which 'the guardian procures Tefillin* for the orphan,' whereas if he is thirteen years old, he is himself considered an adult and one must take into account the wishes of the one who causes him to inherit. He deduces from this that one is speaking here of a child under thirteen years of age. It is clear that this proof is quite weak. For who says here that he is twelve years old?

But the Pinot HaBayit*, citing the commentary of the Kapot Temarim* on the tractate Sukkah* 42a, also says that the orphan must begin to put on Tefillin* at thirteen years of age.

The Aruch HaShulchan* considers that this practice is not good, for it contravenes the sanctity of the Tefillin*. Moreover, the Ot Chaim*, by the Rabbi of Munkatch, as well as the Darkei Chaim VeShalom*, which enumerates all the customs he observed, ask that Tefillin* not be put on, even for a single day, before the age of thirteen.

The custom has spread to accustom boys to put on Tefillin* two or three months before the age of thirteen, as the Admur HaZaken* cites in his Shulchan Aruch*. In my humble opinion and taking all these elements into account, in the absence of a clear reason and in an exceptional situation, there is no reason to have orphans put on Tefillin* before other children. Instead of showing them how to put on Tefillin*, it is preferable to teach them Torah* and Mitzvot*.

In addition to all that has just been said, there is reason to fear that such a child might be counted in the Minyan*. One may also say that it is not good to advance this age for an orphan, given that the Admur HaZaken* does not speak of it in his Shulchan Aruch*. Certainly, this reason is not absolute because, it seems to me, the Admur HaZaken* avoids citing laws that present a truly novel aspect, not having been mentioned by the Decisors who preceded him. It is known that the Rif* and the Rambam* had adopted the same usage.

Regarding the custom of the family of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, began to put on Tefillin* in secret in 5651[7], when he was eleven years old.

F) Does the phrase Brich Rachamana*[8] fulfill the Torah* obligation to recite a blessing after the meal?

The three blessings*[9] are instituted by the Torah* and this phrase replaces only the first, when there is no other option, according to the tractate Berakhot* 40b. This can be deduced from the question posed by the Gemara*, 'perhaps women are exempt from this blessing after the meal, since they did not receive a portion of Eretz Yisrael*, did not enter into the covenant*[10] and are not obligated in the study of Torah*,' all of these elements being mentioned in the second blessing.

It should be known that, according to the ruling of the Admur HaZaken*, one says in this phrase Rachamana Elakana Malka De'alma, Hashem our Hashem, King of the world, according to the opinion of Rabbi Yehudah, at the beginning of the ninth chapter of the tractate Berakhot*. The laws of blessings appearing in his Siddur* were composed after his Shulchan Aruch*[11], in which it is not said Elakana, our Hashem, and Malka, King. Obviously, there is no reason to distinguish between the blessings.

G) Must one respond Amen to the blessings recited by children during their study?

The tractate Berakhot* 53b establishes clearly that one does not respond. The Tur Shulchan Aruch* retains the principle without any ambiguity. I do not understand how you could have a doubt on this matter.

H) When teaching blessings to children who are obligated to say them[12], is it permitted to pronounce the Name of Hashem during study, even when no blessing needs to be recited?

The Gemara* and the Tur Shulchan Aruch* say that one has the right to pronounce the Name of Hashem when teaching children. No prohibition is placed upon the teacher, since this is part of his instruction. On the contrary, he thereby fulfills a Mitzvah*, since it is written: 'And you shall teach them to your children'[13]. How much more so for the student, since it concerns his own study. The tractate Kiddushin* 29b teaches, indeed, that a man's own study takes precedence over that of his son.

The Admur HaZaken* modifies the terms of the Magen Avraham* and the Shulchan Aruch*. Indeed, whereas the Magen Avraham* speaks of 'an adult who learns the blessings in the Gemara*,' the Admur HaZaken* says: 'an adult who practices.' One may, moreover, question the formulation of the Magen Avraham*, which distinguishes the adult from the child, but this is not the occasion to do so.

In any case, one may consider that the Admur HaZaken* bases himself on the fact that the Gemara* speaks of children and not of students. This can be explained as follows. It is possible to teach someone who is already obligated to say the blessings. One should therefore not do so before that, at least according to the opinion of the Sages.

The child, on the other hand, is at all times exempt from saying the blessings, although one responds Amen if he pronounces one, which one does not do if he says it during his study. This can be justified by the necessity of giving him an education, which falls upon the father, just as the child is obligated to receive it.

This does not therefore justify that a third party, who is not obligated to give this child an education, may pronounce the Name of Hashem for him when this is not necessary. On this basis, no distinction can be made between the time when the child receives an education and the rest of the time. Once a permission to pronounce this Name has been granted, it is also granted to the father.

This is the explanation that can be given, but it remains, nonetheless, somewhat difficult.

I) May a child be charged with holding the Sefer Torah* after it has been presented to the congregation?

I have been able to verify that such a practice was indeed in use, without anyone seeking to oppose it.

J) Must one who prays alone pronounce, in a different manner, the thirteen Attributes of Divine Mercy*, depending on whether it is the Shacharit* prayer, the Minchah* prayer, or the Selichot*?

I have never seen and never heard that such a difference could be made. The Shulchan Aruch* gives no specification on this matter. The Siddur Tehillat Hashem*, complete edition, is the photographic reproduction of the previous edition and time has not permitted it to be corrected as it should have been.

K) When should one begin to say the Kaddish* following the reading of the Torah*, during the Shabbat* Minchah* prayer?

You will consult chapter 29 of the Sha'ar HaKolel*. Our custom, according to the teachings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, is to say it shortly before one has finished covering the Sefer Torah*. One then finishes doing so as quickly as possible, one says the verse Yehalelu*, so that this Kaddish* is completed when the Sefer Torah* has already been returned, and as far as possible, should be as close as possible to the prayer.

L) I have just received the photograph you sent me for the album that will evoke the memory of the Chassidim* and will be deposited in the study of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*. You know what the Admur HaZaken* says of alacrity in Iggeret HaKodesh*: 'With a tremendous alacrity, in order to demonstrate his joy and his goodwill.'

Alacrity alludes to Avraham* who 'rose early in the morning.' The word 'tremendous' recalls that he saddled his donkey himself. He thus showed others that he possessed this quality, so that they would see it and emulate it.

The Chassidic* discourse published on the occasion of 12 Tammuz says that the effort of one who attains Teshuvah* is directed toward other people. Avraham* himself, going to sacrifice his son, was acting against his nature and thereby brought proof that he truly feared Hashem. Such is the difference between one who ascends toward Teshuvah* and the perfect Tzaddik*.

Avraham* thus manifested 'his joy and his goodwill,' the profound aspect of his will and his pleasure. You will consult the end of the series of Chassidic* discourses of Pesach* 5709, which clarifies the difference between joy and pleasure.

M) You surely know that my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, wishes to receive and record the stories of the elderly Chassidim* and their biographies. It would therefore be wise for you to write down the memories of your father. You will send them to the Otzar HaChassidim*[15] publishing house, to the attention of the memory section. You will also encourage your students to do the same.

You will surely confirm having received this letter.

With greetings to your entire community,
