Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, which was undated, in which you ask me whether one should celebrate an engagement or perform, on that occasion, an act of kinyan* (see note 1).
In fact, this is of little importance. You will ask the chassidim* of your city what the recent local custom has been, and you will follow it. On the other hand, the setting of the wedding date, at a good and fruitful time, is of importance.
To prepare for it, the groom must commit, as soon as possible, to submit himself to the Torah*, as I told him. Concretely, he must strengthen his submission to Hashem, and you know my opinion (see note 2) on this matter — that the interval between the moment both families give their agreement and the wedding should not be prolonged.
May Hashem grant that the engagement and the wedding that follows take place at a good and fruitful time, and that they build a chassidic* home that will be happy, materially and spiritually.
With my blessing,
