To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Shneur Zalman, called Dr. Itschaki (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter of 2 Teves*, in which you tell me that you have set the introduction of the Sefer Torah* into the synagogue for the 15th of Shevat*, the day of the New Year of Trees. By separate dispatch, a pamphlet has been sent to you containing a letter (see note 2) from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, regarding the introduction of a Sefer Torah* (see note 3). No doubt you will receive it in time (see note 4).
Our Sages say that one confers merit upon a day that is propitious by nature, and you know the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* that from everything one must derive a lesson for the service of Hashem — that is, for fulfilling the mission justifying one's creation, which is precisely this service, as the Mishnah* states at the end of tractate Kiddushin*.
One can also find an allusion to this in the fact that, as our Sages say, man is a "small world," so that everything found in the world has its counterpart in man. The world contains four kingdoms (see note 5): mineral, vegetable, animal, and human. And the service of Hashem likewise contains four stages, each higher than the one before.
The first stage is comparable to the mineral. One then only receives, without any personal contribution. This corresponds essentially to the earliest age and to childhood. Then one rises to the vegetable, and from that point, a single grain of wheat can produce a very large number; a seed can give birth to a tree that will bear many fruits. From then on, what one receives, what one acquires through study and reflection, can be worked in length, in breadth, and in depth. And one can thus develop one's own personality, to the fullest extent possible.
Subsequently, at the cost of intense moral and physical effort, one rises to the animal, and from then on, one masters oneself and suppresses, for oneself and for one's surroundings, one's evil nature inherited from one's forefathers (see note 6). One can, moreover, change location (see note 7), for one is not bound to one's environment. Nevertheless, this is not yet the ultimate elevation. There remains another stage to reach — that of the human kingdom.
Man can conduct a profound intellectual analysis. His understanding is not limited to what is applied, to concrete action, as is the case for animals. Thus, the fox, for example, is the most cunning animal. This means that in one's service of Hashem, one does not content oneself with knowing what to do and what not to do. One endeavors, in the truest sense, to know the Creator, as it is said: "Know the Elokim* of your father." In general, one can achieve this through the inner dimension of the Torah*, which in our era has been revealed and explained by Chassidus*.
It follows from all this that the beginning of man's development is, above all, an elevation from one stage to another, from the mineral to the vegetable. This process begins on the New Year of Trees, as it is said: "Man is like the tree of the field." Then comes the New Year of Animals and that of Humans, as indicated by the Mishnah* of tractate Rosh Hashanah*, at the beginning of the first chapter.
The final idea, which is also the central point of all this, is, in other words, the following: "Recite before Me verses proclaiming My Sovereignty, in order to proclaim Me your King," as our Sages say in the first chapter of Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer*.
With my blessing,
