Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your express letter of 2 Teves*, which I have just received. You mention two proposals: your trip to the United States and the search for a means of ensuring your livelihood in the country where you currently find yourself.

It is clear that you must give priority to the second proposal, for various reasons, and above all because it seems that your current problem is a lack of enthusiasm, of ardor to settle in the proper manner.

In my view, it is absolutely indispensable that you act, as one must (see note 1), for everything that concerns you in general, and for earning your livelihood and settling down in particular. You will do so honestly and not merely to discharge an obligation, to satisfy the will of those who ask it of you.

May Hashem grant that the well-known statement of our Sages — "If you make efforts, they will be crowned with success" — apply to you in both respects: first, that you direct your efforts in this domain, for in our world the principle is: "You shall eat bread by the sweat of your brow" — and it is only in the World to Come* that the work will be done by others; and second, that the conclusion of this promise also be fulfilled: "they will be crowned with success."

It is appalling that you do not say a word about the 10th of Kislev* (see note 2), Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 3), or Chanukah*. There must have been a chassidic* gathering.

במענה על מכתבו המהיר מב' טבת אשר ז"ע נתקבל, בו כותב אודות שתי הצעות, נסיעתו לארצוה"ב, וחיפוש ענין של פרנסה בהמדינה בה נמצא עתה,

ומובן שהסברא השני' קודמת ומכמה טעמים, והעיקר אשר החסרון ע"ע הוא כנראה חוסר המרץ של והעדר ההתעסקות בהסתדרות כדבעי... ולכן לדעתי מההכרח הכי גדול שיראה פעילות הדרושה בעניניו בכלל ובענין של פרנסה והסתדרות ביחוד ויעשה זה אליבא דנפשי' ולא רק לצאת ידי חובתו ולהשביע רצון הדורשים זה ממנו, ויה"ר אשר מרז"ל הידוע יגעת ומצאת יקוים בשתי הנקודות שיתייגע בהאמור (והרי הנהגת עולמנו הוא בזיעת אפך תאכל לחם, ורק לע"ל מלאכתו נעשית ע"י אחרים), ויקוים גם סוף המאמר, ומצאת.

מבהיל שאינו מזכיר אף מילה בהנוגע לימי יו"ד וי"ט כסלו וחנוכה, והרי בודאי היתה איזה התועדות וכו'.
