Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Kislev*, in which you tell me that you are animated by a profound desire to continue your study of Torah*, but that, for the moment, you cannot find within yourself the patience and ardor necessary to satisfy this desire.

The solution is therefore as follows:

A) The time for study must be fixed, without it being too burdensome. Naturally, a person goes from the simpler to the more complex, especially when he has interrupted his studies for some time.

B) One must endeavor, to the fullest extent possible, to have a study partner. First of all, this is one of the means of acquiring the Torah*. One can verify that what is fixed has greater stability, for one feels embarrassment before one's classmates and cannot find any excuse to justify oneself.

C) One must not be discouraged if the first attempt, or even the second, is not conclusive. It is in the nature of things that this be so. One may obtain nothing on several occasions. Nevertheless, if one is truly determined, one will ultimately know success.

You know that in all things, the help of Hashem is decisive, in particular for what concerns Torah* and mitzvos*, in our period of particularly dark exile. It would therefore be good for you to give, every weekday morning before the prayer, a few coins to tzedakah*. Each day as well, including Shabbos* and Yom Tov*, you will read a few chapters of Tehillim*, after the prayer.

May Hashem grant that you announce good news to me. You will tell me that you have begun to put all of this into practice, that you observe the fruits of your effort, as it is said: "When one makes efforts, they are crowned with success."

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
