To the young man, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Avraham Avich Mordechai (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the first day of Chanukah*:

A) The Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden dimension of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed dimension of the Torah*, says that the injunction according to which "one may not spend more than a fifth" (see note 2) applies only in normal times, but not for one who seeks the healing of his soul (see note 3).

This statement appears in various texts of which he is the author, in particular at the end of chapter 3 of the Iggeres HaTeshuvah*.

B) Our Sages, in tractate Kesubos* 67b, question Mar Ukva and ask why he spent more than a fifth, even though in his situation he could be compared to a man who attains Teshuvah*, as stated in the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Sanhedrin* 31b.

This does not contradict what was said above. For his Teshuvah* was already complete, meaning he had obtained the "healing." This is self-evident. This is what the Alter Rebbe* says in chapter 10 of the Iggeres HaKodesh*.

C) Tractate Bava Basra* 73b reports the words of Rav Papa bar Shmuel: "If I had not been present, I would not have believed it." The statement of Rabbi Yochanan, on page 75a — "If you had not seen it, you would not have believed it" — is not connected to the former, for several reasons:

1. The student of Rabbi Yochanan mocked the words of the Sages, which is not the case here.

2. Rav Papa speaks of "believing," which may mean he would not have believed it should be interpreted literally. By contrast, in mocking, one entirely contradicts what is said, as the content of that mockery itself indicates.

3. The statement that the student mocked must be interpreted literally, as before, which is not the case for the remark of Rav Papa, formulated after the fact.

4. According to several views among the early Sages, the narratives of Rabbah bar bar Channah reported here are merely allusions. Consult also the holy Zohar*, volume 3, page 223b, and the Tikkunei Zohar*, Tikkun 7. These allusions are elucidated by all the commentators of the Talmud* and by the Ein Yaakov*, at this reference.

It follows that "If I had not been present, I would not have believed it" has nothing to do with that student's mockery.

D) Our Sages say, according to tractate Bava Basra* 74b, that the Holy One, blessed be He, slew the angel of the sea at the creation of the world. You raise an objection from tractate Chulin* 41b, which says: "One does not perform shechitah* over the seas, so as not to give the impression that one is offering a sacrifice to the angel of the sea."

I do not understand your question at all. Indeed, what does it matter that the angel of the sea is dead? Whoever sacrifices to idols does so before an inert object of wood or stone. Likewise, one may also perform such a sacrifice because one is unaware of the statement of our Sages in tractate Bava Basra*.

E) You also ask me about the statement of our Sages in tractate Pesachim* 118b, according to which Hashem addressed the angel of the sea at the time of the Exodus from Egypt.

Consult Midrash Shemos Rabbah*, chapter 15, according to which the angel of the sea mentioned in tractate Bava Basra* is the angel of the ocean and not of the other seas, whereas tractate Pesachim* obviously refers to the angel of the Red Sea.

Moreover, this question does not arise in any case. For after the angel of the sea was slain, another could have replaced him. For it is clear that every creature must have a corresponding angel and star above.

Furthermore, it should be noted that regarding the statement of our Sages in tractate Bava Basra*, there are divergent Midrashim. In that tractate, it is said that the angel of the sea is called Rahav, whereas according to various other texts, this name designates the angel of Egypt and of the Red Sea. And on this subject, one finds still other opinions.

You do not describe your study program, but at least from now on you will establish a fixed study of Chassidus*. In accordance with the expression of the Alter Rebbe*, this should be fixed both in time and in the soul.

May Hashem grant you success.

With blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary,

E. Kwint,
