To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 21 Kislev*. You describe, albeit very briefly, the chassidic* gathering (see note 2) and its success. No doubt you are also alluding to the Mishnah* according to which "it is not theory but practice that is essential" — meaning that the words of encouragement and the good resolutions will be followed by concrete effect in the days that follow.

To achieve this result, experience shows that from time to time one must remind and encourage, especially on the occasion of propitious days. As I have told several chassidim*, we have the merit of observing that all opposition to the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 3) has now disappeared. One can therefore lament much more clearly every opportunity that is not seized in this regard.

Moreover, some claim verbally to be opponents or even take a few actions in this direction, solely due to an appalling lack of knowledge that could be dispelled with a few explanations given in a pleasant manner. All who observe the situation objectively will agree that this is so.

You will surely also take advantage, for this purpose, of the days of Chanukah*, whose central point is an ever-increasing illumination, to illuminate the darkness — "at the door of one's house, toward the outside."

With blessing, to give good news of all this, and for the success of all the participants in these activities of great importance,

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"א כסלו, בו כותב אף כי בקיצור נמרץ מההתועדות והצלחתה, ובודאי כוונתו גם מתאימה לדבר משנה לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה עיקר, ז. א. שדברי ההתעוררות וההחלטות יביאו לפעולות בהנוגע להפועל במשך הימים הבאים אחרי זה, וכפי שרואים במוחש דורש זה הזכרה וזירוז מזמן לזמן, ובפרט בימי סגולה וימי רצון, וכבר מלתי אמורה לכמה מאנ"ש אשר זכינו שאין כבר התנגדות להפצת המעינות, ולכן חבל כ"פ ככה על כל הזדמנות שאין מנצלים אותה בשטח זה, ולא עוד אלא אפילו האומרים בדבורם שהם מנגדים ואפילו העושים איזה פעולות בכיון זה, אין זה אלא מחסרון ידיעה מבהיל, שע"י הסברה קלה בדרכי נועם יבטלוה, וכנראה כ"ז במוחש לכל אלו המתבוננים אליבא דנפשי', ובודאי מנצלים ג"כ ימי חנוכה בזה שהנקודה בהם מוסיף והולך להאיר החשך ועל פתח ביתו מבחוץ.
