To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Zeev Wolf (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, the festival of liberation (see note 2). I am surprised that you make no mention of the chassidic* gathering, of the words of encouragement heard there, which surely gave rise to good resolutions that will take effect in thought, speech, and action.

You mention the third birthday of your son Yisrael, to whom Hashem will grant long life. This will be celebrated on Rosh Chodesh* Shevat*, and you plan to cut his hair on Lag BaOmer*. I have given my position on this matter to several chassidim* and I have written (see note 3) that, unless there is a good reason to act in this way — for example, a well-established and perfectly justified custom — it seems to me that there is no reason to delay this haircut.

My position is explained as follows. One can deduce from an expression used by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding this haircut, that it enables the child to be educated in the fear of Hashem — that is, to bring to light the holiness in his soul.

This explanation is based on a well-known statement of our Sages, cited in the Midrash Tanchuma*, Parshas Kedoshim*. You should also consult the beginning of the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, which notes that an allusion to this is found in the Written Law, as it is said: "The fourth year... it shall be holy."

By performing a concrete action (see note 4), one can strengthen all of this and reveal it in the world of action, as established in various texts. Why, then, delay the revelation of such holiness by several months or several weeks? Does not every addition to this holiness strengthen the education of the child, including in its material dimension?

May Hashem grant you and your wife success in educating all your children to Torah*, the marriage canopy, and good deeds, in good health and in wholeness.

With blessing for an ever more luminous Chanukah* (see note 5),
