To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

After a long interruption, I received your letter of 22 Kislev*. I noted with pleasure the chassidic* gathering organized on the occasion of the luminous day of the festival of liberation (see note 2) of Yud-Tes Kislev*. In addition, the women and girls of Chabad* gathered the following day to hear a lecture on the theme of that day.

Surely all of this will have a concrete impact. Our Torah*, the Torah of life, states: "Great is study that leads to action," and the certainty of this promise is also established by several laws of Torah* study.

One is entitled to offer an interpretation of the signs. In this case, your letter reaches me on the eve of Chanukah*, which underscores that the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 3) must grow ever more, from day to day (see note 4). This addition is accomplished with pure oil — that is, through the part of the Torah* called the Tree of Life (see note 5), in which there is no impurity, as stated in the Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 26. Various texts compare the Torah* to water, to bread, to wine, to oil. Within the Torah* itself, water and bread represent its revealed dimension, while wine and oil correspond to the secrets and the secrets of secrets.

May Hashem grant that through this dissemination and this increase, we merit very soon the fulfillment of the promise that "the night shall shine as the day," with the coming of our righteous Moshiach*, one of the eight men who receive anointing (see note 6), as the Alter Rebbe* explains in his Torah Or*, pages 33d and 34c.

לאחרי ההפסק הארוך נתקבל מכתב כת"ר מכ"ב כסלו, ובנועם קראתי בו אודות ההתועדות בקשר עם יום הבהיר חג הגאולה י"ט כסלו העבר, ואשר גם נשי חב"ד נתאספו למחרתו בהרצאה על פרשת היום וכו'.

ובודאי יפעול כל זה בהנוגע למעשה, וכידוע הבטחת תורתנו תורת חיים גדול לימוד שמביא לידי מעשה, ודאית הבטחה נראית ג"כ מכמה הלכות בהלכות ת"ת, וסימנא מילתא היא קבלת המכתב ערב חנוכה, שעבודת הענין דהפצת המעינות חוצה הרי צ"ל מוסיף והולך מיום ליום בענין, וההוספה בשמן טהור ביחוד חלק התורה הנקרא אילנא דחיי דלית תמן טומאה וכו' (עיין אגה"ק לרבנו הזקן סי' כו), וכבר ידוע בכ"מ שנמשלה התורה למים (לחם) יין ושמן, ובחלקי התורה עצמה, מים ולחם הם נגלה שבתורה ויין ושמן רזא ורזא דרזין.

ויה"ר אשר ע"י ההפצה וההוספה נזכה בקרוב ממש לקיום היעוד דלילה כיום יאיר בביאת משיח צדקנו שהוא משמונה נסיכי אדם, וכמבואר הענין בתורה אור לרבנו הזקן (לג, ד. לד, ג).
