To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, of numerous accomplishments and good conduct,

Rav Moshe Gershon (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I received news of you through the great Rabbanim* and chassidim* who devote themselves to communal needs — emissaries of the Sages, to whom Hashem will grant long life — who visited your city. In accordance with your request, I will mention your name and those you have conveyed to me at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us.

The days of Chanukah* are approaching and, as you know, there are divergent views (see note 2) as to whether they correspond to the Sefirah* of Netzach* — victory — or to that of Hod* — submission. In any case, both are indeed "the legs of truth" (see note 3), which are lower than the body. Despite this, they possess a specific quality, in accordance with the statement of our Sages that all the festivals will cease in the World to Come, with the exception of Chanukah* and Purim*, because of the quality of the "Reflected Light" (see note 4), as specified in various texts.

This is what the Sefer HaChaim* explains, Sefer Parnassah*, at the beginning of chapter 7. You should also consult, in particular, Pirkei de Rabbi Eliezer*, chapter 46, the Yerushalmi*, Taanis*, chapter 2, paragraph 13, the Yotzer* of Shabbos Zachor* (see note 5), and the additions to the Torah Or*, Megillas Esther*.

May Hashem grant that the quality of this Light illuminate also our orphaned generation, at the end of this period of the heel of Moshiach*, that it grow ever more intense from sunset onward, until "the night shall shine as the day," until the imminent coming of the "nefel*" (see note 6).

ויה"ר שמעלה זו תאיר גם בדורנו דור יתום זה דרא דעקבתא דמשיחא בסופו, באור המוסיף והולך משתשקע החמה עד שיפעול דלילה כיום יאיר בביאת בר נפלא בעגלא דידן.
