Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Monday, in which you tell me about what troubles you and prevents you from studying Torah* in the proper manner or concentrating during prayer (see note 1).

It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked. Every weekday, before the morning prayer, you should give a coin to tzedakah*. After prayer — every day, including Shabbos* and the festivals — you should recite Tehillim*, according to their monthly division.

And you should meditate carefully until you have perfectly in mind what is said in various texts regarding Divine Providence. Indeed, in the most literal sense, the Creator of the world, Who directs it, watches over each and every individual in all that concerns him. It follows that you need not worry about all that you write.

Likewise, there is no grounds for expressing, as you state in your letter, "a strong desire for the opposite of life" (see note 2), Heaven forbid. Meditate upon the fact that every Jewish soul is found beneath the Heavenly Throne, that it descends here below and clothes itself in a physical body. This constitutes, for it, a vertiginous descent, for there is absolutely no comparison between the soul above and the body here below. The purpose of this descent is that a Jewish person should act in this world — that he should study Torah*, practice the mitzvos*.

It follows that each of his acts — for example, putting on Tefillin* — has inestimable value. This is the case for everything concerning Torah* and mitzvos*, for "the entire Torah has been compared to Tefillin*." By reflecting on all of this, you will observe the situation as it truly is. You will see the enviable portion that has been entrusted to you, since you can fulfill the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He, in this world, through a way of life in accordance with the instructions of our Torah*, the Torah of life.

You will accomplish all of this with joy, as the Rambam explains at the end of his Laws of the Lulav*. You should also consult his Laws of Opinions, chapter 2.

With blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary,
