To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Shneur Chaim (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 2 Kislev*, which I have just received, in which you detail the proposal you have received for a rabbinical position in Adelaide. You ask me what I think.

I must say that I do not see what the doubt could be, so evident is the matter. You must endeavor, of course in the appropriate manner but with all the necessary firmness, to obtain this position, as long as all the conditions for restoring and improving religious observance have been accepted. It is virtually certain that this acceptance is linked to your agreement to take the position (see note 2). The letter they wrote me also seems to establish such a link.

In fact, even if everything were already perfect regarding, for example, the buildings, this position is still the most important. There is good hope — and it is in fact virtually certain — that you will succeed in bringing the members of your community closer to our Father, Who is in Heaven, to His Torah* and His mitzvos*.

In fact, such is the essential and profound mission of every Jew. One must draw one's own heart and the hearts of the Children of Yisrael* closer to the Holy One, blessed be He, and the Mishnah* states: "I was created to serve my Creator." You also know the saying of the early chassidim*, those of the Alter Rebbe*, whose joy we celebrate (see note 3), according to which "the order of the Torah* is an integral part of it." Now, in that order, the first mitzvah* is: "Be fruitful and multiply" — which means that every Jew must form another Jew.

You mention the education of their children, but that can be arranged, for it is impossible that by putting into practice the mitzvah* of the Creator of the world, the Giver of the Torah*, you would cause a deterioration in the children's education.

Similarly, it is not advisable, in my opinion, to postpone all of this until Pesach*, as you mention in your letter. For every day must have its specific content. Certainly, haste diminishes prestige, but one can surely find a middle path.

More broadly, if the members of the community are motivated, there is no reason to delay concrete action. On the contrary, one must take advantage of it, for who knows what will happen afterward? Similarly, they have given their agreement for the construction of a mikveh*, and even if your arrival is delayed for some time, this construction must nevertheless be begun as quickly as possible, explaining that it requires several weeks and perhaps even several months.

I am gratified by the opportunity to respond to your letter on this propitious day. Everything is an effect of Divine Providence, as Chassidus* in particular emphasizes. May Hashem grant that the merit of this day protect you and your family, so that you obtain the satisfaction of all your needs — which also implies assuming your true role, with joy and success.

With blessing on the occasion of the festival of liberation and with greetings to all the chassidim* of your city, particularly your adoptive father, the great Rav and chassid*, to whom Hashem will grant long life (see note 4),

P.S.: I enclose a fascicle that has just been published. Surely you will make its contents available to as many as possible. The merit of all depends on it.
