Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter in due time, as well as your greetings conveyed through my close relative, the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs and is of good conduct, Rav Azriel Zelig Slonim. You mention the publication of a manuscript whose content indicates that it was composed by the author of the Merkeves HaMishneh, that is, Rabbi Adam Baal Shem (see note 2).

You will understand how surprised I was by this news. I waited, before responding to your letter, to find a reference or evidence establishing that the author of the Merkeves HaMishneh is indeed Rabbi Adam Baal Shem. At the conclusion of my research, I have for the moment found only a conjecture to this effect, put forward by Rav Reuven Margolis, as indicated in the periodical Be Michor of 12 Iyar 5701 (see note 3).

I must say that in my opinion, his conjecture is "a mountain suspended by a hair" — or perhaps even suspended in the air, without a hair. I never heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, that there was knowledge of anything printed of which Rabbi Adam Baal Shem was the author.

Admittedly, one cannot draw proof from what one has not seen or not heard. But in this matter, there is cause for astonishment. For many years, you said nothing about all this, you wrote nothing on this subject, although you devoted much time to the letters found in the Genizah (see note 4) of Kherson (see note 5), in which Rabbi Adam Baal Shem is extensively discussed.

Of course, basing oneself on the introduction of the publisher of the Merkeves HaMishneh, who had heard that in his generation the author was called Rabbi Adam Baal Shem, is in no way sufficient to explain the silence on this subject in all the accounts, in the traditions transmitted within the Rebbe's household from generation to generation, from the Alter Rebbe*, who received from the Maggid* (see note 6), and the latter from our master, the Baal Shem Tov*.

Indeed, no one says that the author of the Merkeves HaMishneh is the one whose writings reached the Baal Shem Tov*. Nevertheless, perhaps you possess another source, another reference for this assertion. I would be obliged if you would transmit to me all the details on this subject (see note 7).

Of course, I would like to know whether there are, in the collection of manuscripts you direct, any writings of Chassidus* by the masters of Chabad, or by the Baal Shem Tov* and the Maggid*, that are as yet unpublished. I thank you for kindly transmitting this information to me.

בעתו קבלתי מכתבו וכן הפ"ש ע"י ש"ב הרה"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ בעל מדות כו' מו"ה עזריאל זליג שי' סלונים, ותוכנו הדפסת כתב יד אשר תוכנו מוכיח שמחברו הוא בעל המחבר ספר מרכבת המשנה הוא כ"ק ר' אדם בעל שם.

ומובנת ההפתעה שהיתה לי בהודעה זו. וחכיתי במענתי על המכתב עד שאמצא איזה מקור ויסוד אשר מחבר ס' מרכבת המשנה הוא כ"ק ר' אדם בע"ש, ולאחר החיפוש והחקירה מצאתי לע"ע רק השערה בזה מהרב ר' ראובן מרגליות שי', כנדפס בשבועון במישור די"ב אייר תש"א, ומוכרחני לאמר שהשערתו לדעתי הוא הר התלוי בשערה, ואולי גם השערה אינה ותלוי באויר, ומעולם לא שמעתי מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע שישנו מה נדפס לכ"ק ר' אדם בע"ש, ואף שלא ראינו ולא שמענו אינה ראי', הנה בכגון דא תמוה הדבר, שבמשך כל השנים לא הזכיר וגם לא כתב עד"ז למרות שכמה זמן הקדיש למכתבי הגניזה החרסנית הידועה שבהם מדובר רבות גם בהנוגע לכ"ק ר' אדם בע"ש, ומובן אשר לסמוך על הקדמת המו"ל של ספר מרכבת המשנה אשר שמעתי שבדורו קראוהו בשמו ר' אדם, אין זה מספיק כלל לתרץ השתיקה עד"ז, בכל הסיפורים והמסורות שנמסרו בבית הרב, רבי מפי רבי עד לרבנו הזקן שקבל מהרב המגיד שקבל ממורנו הבעש"ט מבלי הזכיר שמחבר מרכבת המשנה הוא הוא שכתביו הגיעו להבעש"ט וכו', והנה אפשר אשר אצל כת"ר ישנו עוד יסוד ומקור לשמועה זו, ות"ח מראש אם יודיעני בפרטיות עד"ז.

מובן שאתענין במאד לדעת אם יש באוסף - הכתבי היד שבהנהלתו כתבי חסידות של נשיאי חב"ד או כתבי יד מהבעש"ט והה"מ שעדיין לא ראו אור הדפוס, ות"ח בעד טרחתו להודיעני גם עד"ז.
