To the young man, Raphael Pinchas (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 Kislev*. I read in it with pleasure about your activities to spread Judaism, Chassidus*, and all that it entails. Surely you will not content yourself with what has been accomplished until now. On the contrary, this will arouse in you increased strength and determination to multiply your accomplishments, in an ever-growing manner.

This is the teaching of the days of Chanukah* that are approaching. One must add, illuminate more and more (see note 2) the outside and the darkness of the night, since "the mitzvah* (see note 3) applies from sunset, at the door of one's house, toward the outside."

You ask me at what time to light the Chanukah* lights. Our custom is to light between Minchah* and Maariv*. However, if one has not done so at that time, one may still do so afterward.

Surely you are strengthening your own fixed time for the study of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. May Hashem grant you success.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו מה' כסלו, נעם לי לקרות בו מפעולותיו הטובות בהפצת היהדות והחסידות ועניני', ובודאי לא יסתפק בהנעשה עד עתה, ואדרבה זה יעורר בו תוספת כח ואומץ להוסיף בפעולות אלו מוסיף והולך, וכהלימוד דימי חנוכה הבע"ל שמוסיפין והולכין ומאירין גם את החוץ וחשכת הלילה, שהרי מצותה משתשקע החמה ועל פתח ביתו מבחוץ.

ולשאלתו אודות זמן הדלקת נר חנוכה, מנהגנו הוא להדליק בין מנחה למעריב (אלא שבאם לא הדליק אז מדליק לאחר זה).

בודאי גם לעצמו מוסיף בקביעות עתים לתורה בנגלה ובחסידות, והשי"ת יצליחו.
