Igrot Kodesh · Letter 494 — Date Line and Sefirat HaOmer
Volume 3 · Letter 90
By the grace of Hashem,
16 Sivan 5709,
To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav B. T.[1], the Shochet*,
I greet you and bless you,
I received your first letter some time ago, and the one dated 12 Sivan has just reached me. You have no doubt received my reply from the eve of Shavuos*, to which was attached the booklet published for that holiday, which you have surely made available to as many people as possible.
I also hope that you will engage in communal activity[2], particularly with regard to the Maamad*[3] and the establishment of public Torah* classes. You will begin and fruitfully continue what you concluded in Paris.
Regarding your settling in a new place, you will draw a lesson from what my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, told me some time ago: 'After our marriage, when a few rooms were built for us (in the family home in Lubavitch*), we first brought in a class of young boys, who studied Torah* there.'
In other words, it is through Torah* and Mitzvos* that one can obtain blessing. It is known that they are compared not only to receptacles, but also to the limbs of the body, which receive spiritual light and vitality. You will consult, in this regard, the chassidic* discourse of Shavuos* at paragraph one and the references indicated therein.
Likewise, the receptacle of Torah* and Mitzvos* also passes through Torah* and Mitzvos*.
* * *
I now turn to your question. You tell me that you lost a day during your journey[4]. You ask me the reason for this, and in particular, the effect it may have on the counting of the Omer*.
The reasons are as follows:
A) The earth is round and not flat. It follows that the sun is not seen at the same moment in all points of the globe.
B) The sun moves from east to west. The further east a point on the globe is, the earlier the sun will rise there, while it will rise later if one is to the west. Our Sages say, in tractate Rosh Hashana* 20b, and the Maor* explains, that the sun rose in Jerusalem six hours later than in Babylon. And the Zohar*, volume 3, page 10a, distinguishes different zones of the earth, specifying that when it is day in one, it is night in another. You will also consult the beginning of the Shaar HaKolel*.
C) Consequently, if it is, for example, Sunday at noon in Jerusalem, the moment when the sun is directly overhead, it will be Sunday at eighteen hours in Babylon, which is to the east of Jerusalem. At the far end of Siberia, which is to the east of Babylon, at the same distance that separates the latter from Jerusalem, it will be midnight, in the night between Sunday and Monday.
Conversely, if one leaves Jerusalem heading west, one will arrive in America, which is approximately as far from Jerusalem as Babylon, and there it will be six in the morning when it is noon in Jerusalem. If one continues westward, always the same distance, one will arrive in Siberia, where there will be six hours less.
Thus, at the same point on the globe, depending on whether one arrives from the east or from the west, it will be Sunday or Monday.
To resolve the uncertainty, one must determine the place from which the counting of days begins.
And this is where the entire difficulty begins. The heavens and the earth are round. In a globe, there is no beginning and no end. Therefore, any point on the globe can be the point where the counting begins.
Great men of our people have discussed this question, for example the responsa Bnei Tziyon* and the Yomam* of Rav Tukatchinski*. Three opinions are stated regarding the point where the days begin:
A) 90 degrees to the east of Jerusalem.
B) 145 degrees to the east of Jerusalem.
C) 180 degrees to the east of Jerusalem.
Australia, according to these last two opinions, is to the east of Jerusalem, in accordance with the calendar used by the people of that country. This is therefore the counting you must adopt in the future, and this is what the Jews who reside there do. Perhaps it is even so according to the first opinion, since for it, the date line passes through the middle of Australia. But there is no need to delve further into this opinion, since it comes from only one Sage.
Everything just stated concerns only the counting of days of the week or of the month. The counting of the Omer*, on the other hand, depends only on the time that elapses and is therefore not affected by this analysis.
The question that arises is therefore the following. If someone crosses, during the period of the Omer*, the time boundary at which one loses or gains a day, and if he conforms to the custom of his destination country, he will count, as the case may be, forty-eight or fifty days. How then can he count the Omer* and, consequently, celebrate Shavuos*, which depends on this count and not on a date in the month?
I have not yet found any source that addresses the problem posed by the counting of the Omer*. The few points that follow are therefore given only as indications:
A) In the counting of the Omer*, all forty-nine days are linked, constituting, from different points of view, a sequence and a single entity. Consequently, one who counts one day prepares himself, in this way, to count the forty-eight days that follow as well. And the obligation rests upon each person and not upon the place.
Thus, one who counts one day commits to counting another forty-eight and not forty-seven or forty-nine. For the verse indeed says 'seven complete weeks,' no more and no less. All this, of course, does not apply to a date in the week or in the month.
B) On the other hand, the counting of the Omer* is also linked to the days of the month, by the fact that one should bring the Omer* offering[5], if the Temple existed. Now, according to Halacha*, it is currently, for example, the 30th of Nissan* where you are and not the 29th. One must therefore count the fifteenth day of the Omer* and not the fourteenth.
One must also consider the two possible countings, according to the person or according to the place. Should one give precedence to the person and note that in this case he was only able to count thirteen days, or take the days of the month as the criterion?
Or should one say that the counting of the Omer* must be the same for all Jews. Or perhaps the counting can be personal, insofar as it falls upon each individual. One might think it sufficient to say 'today is the fifteenth of the Omer*,' which is indeed the case according to the calendar. Or must these fifteen days necessarily have been mentioned in one's personal count?
Both lines of reasoning being possible, you will maintain both counts simultaneously and will therefore say them without a blessing, especially according to the opinion of the responsa Dvar Avraham*, volume 1, chapter 34, according to which the counting of the Omer* must be certain and cannot in any way be done under conditions of doubt, although this is not the opinion of the Maor*, at the end of tractate Pesachim*, which develops another explanation for the reason why one does not maintain two counts, due to the uncertainty regarding the fixing of the festival[6].
* * *
But all this leads us to pose another question. How will you celebrate the festival of Shavuos*? In my humble opinion, and although this idea is new, you must do so on the day after the Jews of Australia, in accordance with the first opinion, since Shavuos* depends only on the counting of the Omer*. That day will be, for you, the first, under conditions of doubt, and not based on custom, according to this first opinion.
Furthermore, the first day of the festival for them is also under conditions of doubt, since Halacha* may follow the second opinion. There is therefore no certainty. You must therefore count forty-nine days. On the first day of the festival, you will put on Tefillin*, in accordance with Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim* chapter 31. During these two days, you will not be called up to the Torah*.
Then, I thought that there is yet a third possibility. Both definitions of the Omer* are correct and Shavuos* must therefore be the fiftieth day according to the first count and according to the second. Indeed, these lines of reasoning are equally valid and one must therefore retain both. There will therefore be two days of Shavuos*, and what appears on the first day[7] is forbidden on the second. To recite the blessing of Shehecheyanu*, one will need to take a new fruit. All opinions will agree in such a case, including those who dispense with doing so on the second evening of Rosh Hashana*.
According to this opinion, the counting of the Omer* can be said with a blessing, since it is not done under conditions of doubt. It is certain, indeed, that fourteen days have elapsed according to the first count, fifteen according to the second. And it is indeed a Mitzvah* to maintain both counts simultaneously.
In this case, a single blessing suffices for both counts, which are indeed one and the same Mitzvah*, just as the Tefillin* of the arm and of the head are. It seems that the lesser count must be done first, as is said regarding Retze* and Yaaleh VeYavo*, when the conclusion of the festival day is a Shabbos*[8]. If one has not followed this arrangement, one has nonetheless fulfilled the Mitzvah*, insofar as these are two independent counts from one another.
One cannot think that one thereby transgresses the prohibition of forming separate groups[9], which is, according to some, a commandment of the Torah*, as the Sdei Chemed* indicates. Nor is there here any failure to honor the festival. For all this is discreet, without ostentation. It differs little from the situation of someone from Eretz Yisrael* who leaves that country[10] or of someone who puts on Tefillin* during Chol HaMoed*[11].
One might consider that you should observe a third day of the festival. Indeed, Halacha* may follow the first opinion and the second day of the festival, for you, is the day after the festival for the Jews of Australia.
But this is not the case and one can establish it simply. The second day of Yom Tov*, for us who know how to determine the lunar cycle, is not fixed under conditions of doubt, but is intended to preserve the custom of our ancestors. Now, if our ancestors had lived in Australia, they themselves would have observed only two days of the festival. You therefore have no obligation to add a third.
The Tur* Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim* chapter 624 and other texts build the same reasoning for one who desires to fast on Yom Kippur* for forty-eight hours[12].
* * *
One might think that these doubts and precautions also concern one who crosses the date line during Chol HaMoed* Pesach* or Sukkos* and must celebrate Shevi'i Shel Pesach* or Shemini Atzeres*, which also depend on the fixing of the first day of Pesach* or Sukkos* and not on a date in the month.
A distinction must, however, be made regarding these festivals, for the verse also states their date in the month, as it is said (Shemos* 12:18): 'Until the twenty-first of the month, in the evening.' Furthermore, there is no mention of 'complete weeks' regarding Pesach* and Sukkos*. Therefore, if one is in a place where Shevi'i Shel Pesach* or Shemini Atzeres* is being celebrated, one need not concern oneself with the fact that one has added or subtracted a day, just as one does not do so from one Shabbos* to another.
All this must still be examined more deeply.
* * *
One point must also be emphasized. The explanations just given, leading to adding or removing a day when one crosses the date line, according to the various opinions, and that one must celebrate Shabbos* or the festival based on the days of the month, apply only in an inhabited place. On the other hand, this analysis does not concern those who are on a boat when they cross this line. After having crossed it and until their arrival, they must, under conditions of doubt, observe both days.
Likewise, one must also clarify the status of those who reside in Alaska, since the date line passes through the middle of that region. Now, it is difficult to imagine that on the same street, it is Shabbos* on one side and Sunday on the other. That would be inconceivable. You will consult, in this regard, tractate Eruvin* 76a.
My response has been delayed until now due to my many activities. The booklets and publications you ordered will be sent to you, and you will also be told what they will cost and how to make payment. You will surely take it upon yourself to distribute these books in your country, where practically nothing has been done in this domain.
You ask me about the following passage from the beginning of chapter 5 of Tanya*: 'The intellect grasps and the concept is grasped.' Is there not a repetition here, and what can one deduce from it?
I do not know, at present, of a chassidic* discourse explaining this. In my humble opinion, however, the following explanations can be offered:
A) Even if this clarification adds nothing new, the Tanya* states it explicitly in order to emphasize the conclusion, the perfect unity created between man and Hashem through the study of Torah*.
B) Furthermore, to formulate such an assertion regarding Torah* study is truly a new idea. Indeed, even one whose study is not dedicated to the Name of Hashem, even one designated by the verse 'Hashem said to the wicked: why do you study My laws' and for whom the Torah* is 'a deadly poison,' can, despite all this, grasp through his intellect and have the concept grasped, to the point of confusing it with his flesh and blood. You will consult, in this regard, the laws of Torah* study by the Admur HaZaken*, chapter 3, paragraph 4.
I conclude by wishing you all good and by greeting your family, particularly Mr. Feiglin and the members of his family.

[6] The actual festival of Pesach* may be the first or the second day. The counting of the Omer* could therefore begin on the second or third day, and this uncertainty may persist throughout the entire period.

[8] When one begins a meal on Friday, a festival day, and finishes it during Shabbos*, one says, in the blessing after the meal, first Retze*, the paragraph added for Shabbos*, then Yaaleh VeYavo*, the paragraph added for the festival.
[9] Each person celebrating Shavuos* according to his own count, thereby calling into question the unity of the community.

* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
