Greetings and blessings,
You conclude your letter with praise of your teacher, and I am somewhat surprised by what you write. You clearly indicate that if he were among the students of the Baal Shem Tov*, he would be their equal. If he were among the Sages of the Mishnah* or the Gemara*, he would be their equivalent.
I wonder who, in our generation, is in a position to formulate such an assertion, or anything resembling it. How can one permit oneself to say, on one's own initiative, that a certain person, had he belonged to those generations, would have attained the level of the students of the Baal Shem Tov*, of the Sages of the Mishnah* or the Gemara*? Would that someone in our era truly understood what such levels are. If that were the case, our generation would not be so utterly orphaned!
Moreover, the Zohar* and the Tikkunei Zohar* explain that Eisanim, "the mighty ones," is an anagram of Tannaim*, the Sages of the Mishnah*. This is stated in the Zohar*, volume 3, page 242a, at the beginning of the Gate of Divine Inspiration, and in other texts as well.
Another explanation concerning the Sages of the Mishnah* and the Gemara*, which is nevertheless based on the same idea, appears in the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, in Parshas* Tazria, in the chassidic* discourse entitled "A controversy was raised in the Heavenly academy." And there is yet another in the Biurei HaZohar*, in Parshas* Vayishlach.
Due to our many transgressions, it is not given to everyone to formulate such a statement — "if he were in such-and-such a generation" — and to say this even about one's teacher, to whom one must nevertheless show the greatest respect, according to Halachah*. It is known that one must not exaggerate the praise of those who are in the World of Truth — they themselves absolutely do not desire it (see note 1).
In these days, especially on Yud-Tes Kislev* — the Hilula* of the Maggid* (see note 2), successor of the Baal Shem Tov*, and date of the liberation and victory of the Alter Rebbe*, successor of the Maggid* and the Baal Shem Tov* — may Hashem grant that you achieve increased success in spreading their wellsprings (see note 3), until they reach the outermost reaches, and may the end of our exile be hastened.
Then the reasons of the Torah* will be revealed, as our Sages explain, cited by Rashi* in his commentary on the verse: "He will give me kisses of His mouth." We possess a foretaste of this through the teaching of the early Sages, who are the Baal Shem Tov*, the Maggid*, the Alter Rebbe*, and their disciples.
With my respects and blessing,
