Brooklyn

To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Yosef Menachem (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 13 MarCheshvan*.

You inform me of an improvement in your state of health, and may He Who heals all flesh and performs wonders enable you to continue giving good news. You will tell me that you are getting better and better, and that you will have a speedy and complete recovery.

Moreover, we are approaching Kislev*, the month of miracles and the days of Chanukah* — the completion of the construction of the Sanctuary and the foundation of the Second Beis HaMikdash*. It is in connection with the Sanctuary and the Beis HaMikdash* that it is stated: "They shall make Me a Sanctuary and I shall dwell among them" — that is, within each and every Jew. This is the objective that must be attained, and it can also be achieved during the time of exile.

With blessing to give good news,

I have just received, through the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, of good conduct and bearing a sacred mission, Rav Moshe Weber, the complete Seder Olam Rabbah (see note 2), volume 1, with the commentaries Yemos Olam, Seder Zemanim, and Massores Seder Olam (see note 3). I thank you very much for this gift.

Although my time does not allow me to compare it with previous editions, I presume that one finds in these commentaries what is stated in the introduction — namely, that it will incorporate all the explanations found in the prior notes and references. It is important not to have to search through the older editions.

In this connection, the 5665 (see note 4) edition of the Seder Olam was republished, as a photocopy of the previous one, in New York in 5712 (see note 5).

As you request and in accordance with my custom, I have noted remarks on three or four passages, based on what came to mind while quickly leafing through your book. And our Sages give the assurance that, in the end, peace prevails (see note 6).

These remarks, of a general nature, are as follows:

A) Several calculations, sometimes even simple ones, are repeated both in the tables and in the commentary. This is the case, for example, with the first table, which recurs in the second paragraph of the introduction and in the first paragraph of the Yemos Olam.

B) It has not been specified when the count begins (see note 7) — at the Rosh Hashanah* preceding the creation of man, at the one following it, or at the one after that. You should consult, on this subject, the Rambam*, Laws of the Sanctification of the New Moon, chapter 6, paragraph 8, with its commentaries; Laws of Shemittah* and Yovel*, chapter 10, paragraph 2; and the lengthy discussions in the books dealing with this subject.

At the very least, mention should have been made of this, for this element has implications for the calculations of the Seder Olam. Thus, according to the count that is adopted for instituting a second month of Adar, Adam was created in the first year after Creation — that is, after a full year had elapsed. This is not what the first table states.

C) No mention at all is made of years that are not complete (see note 8). Likewise, in the figures, it is not specified whether one refers, for example, to the course of the one hundred and thirtieth year or to the one hundred and thirtieth completed year. Obviously, several calculations depend on this, and this would have made it possible to resolve some contradictions.

In various cases, the verses and the teachings of our Sages do not resolve the doubt. Other calculations, on the other hand, can be confirmed. But, in any case, mention must be made of this problem, as I said.

In Table 6: It is impossible that in the year 2448 (see note 9), Moshe* stood before Pharaoh and that the Pesach* sacrifice was offered in that same year. Indeed, according to the Seder Olam, the plagues, which intervened between these two events, lasted twelve months. This error is attributable to the imprecision mentioned in paragraph C. One must conclude that Moshe* stood before Pharaoh at the beginning of his eightieth year — that is, in 2447.

In the same table: It is inconceivable to place the three shepherds — Miriam, Aharon, and Moshe* — in the same year, since there was a Rosh Hashanah* in between.

In the introduction, paragraph 1: Was the creation of the world in Nissan* or in Tishrei*? There is no definitive position on this subject. You should consult the Magen Avraham*, at the beginning of chapter 592. You should also see what the Halachah* states regarding the Blessing of the Sun, which is recited at its appointed time (see note 10) — namely, in Nissan*.

Notes:

A) There exists an isolated opinion according to which the world was created on the 1st of Tishrei* or the 1st of Nissan* and not on the 25th of the preceding month (see note 11) — that of the Levush*, at chapter 581. But the Sdei Chemed*, Principles, end of the entry Beis, cites a second authority, the Raz, and he expresses his astonishment at both of them. You should consult what he says.

B) The Shemen Sasson on the Shaar HaKavanos, Part 1, paragraphs 15 and 36, explains these two opinions according to Kabbalah*, in a lengthy analysis.

Chapter 1: Between the Flood and the Tower of Bavel*, there were three hundred and forty years, and the Seder Zemanim details the count: "Arpachshad was born two years after the Flood…" Yet the Flood lasted more than twelve months.

At the very least, mention should have been made of the fact that many Sages have had difficulty explaining the omission of this year (see note 12).

End of chapter 10: The Seder Zemanim highlights the difference in the manner of counting the day during the period when the manna* was consumed and after the death of Moshe*.

Now, one can explain simply that the manna* did not fall on Shabbos*, but according to one opinion, that day had to be counted nonetheless, because it was the same cake that was consumed then. According to the second opinion, it should not be counted, because this does not reflect the merit of Moshe*, since on the eve of Shabbos*, everyone received a double portion.

The Asarah Ma'amaros analyzes the opinions as to whether Moshe* died on Shabbos* or on the eve of that day. And I do not understand why you cite the year 2150 (see note 13). How could he (see note 14) have said, thirty days before the 7th of Adar (see note 15): "Today are completed… (see note 16)"? It is very difficult to accept this idea, but this point will not be developed here.
