Greetings and blessings,

After a long interruption, I have received your letter of 16 Cheshvan*. You ask me to clarify my intention regarding the new buildings, regarding the purchase of houses — in particular that of Mrs. Hertz, which is located approximately half an hour's walk from the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch in Melbourne.

Of course, the girls' school should be as close as possible to the boys' school, but not in the same building. One could, at a stretch, permit it if there were two separate entrances, but in such a case, there would also be mingling before and after school hours. Despite this, one may proceed this way if there is no alternative. This will not be the case, however, if it is on another street. Then the students will not see each other, including during those hours. This is what one should seek, a priori.

Proximity is desirable because, in various domains, "the candle that illuminates one person can illuminate a hundred" (see note 2). This is the case, for example, for administrative work, examinations, and supervision. Of course, if there is no alternative, one will forgo this as well, especially since you surely have a telephone connection, by means of which distance matters little.

You mention the creation of new high school classes (see note 3). But you yourself conclude by saying that this question will arise in three years. In general, your way of approaching the problem is the right one. Indeed, you envision only the addition of classes corresponding to the legally compulsory schooling, but not the classes that follow — which, as you emphasize, entail considerable expense, especially since one does not know how many will wish to continue their studies when the law does not require it.

Surely you are establishing a program in order to take advantage, in the appropriate manner, of the month of Kislev* and its festivals, for the purpose of strengthening and spreading all that concerns Chabad in Melbourne, in particular the Chabad schools.

לאחרי הפסק הארוך נתקבל מכתבו מט"ז חשון, ובשאלתו לברר כוונתי בהנוגע לבנינים חדשים וקניית בתים, ובפרט הבית של מרת הערץ תחי', אשר הוא לערך חצי שעה הילוך מבנין ישיבת אהלי יוסף יצחק ליובאוויטש במעלבורן.

מובן שבכלל מהנכון שיהי' ביה"ס לנערות בסמיכות יותר לביה"ס לנערים (אבל לא באותו הבנין שאפילו אם תהי' כניסה מיוחדה רק בדוחק יש להכשיר, כי סו"ס גם אז יש תערובת קודם התחלת הלימודים ובגמר שלהם, אלא שבשעת הדחק יש להתיר, משא"כ אם יהי' ברחוב אחר, זאת אומרת שלא יראו זא"ז בשעות האמורות זהו ענין דלכתחלה), ומעלת קירוב המקום הוא שכמה ישנם ענינים שהם בגדר נר לאחד נר למאה וכמו עבודת המשרד, בחינות, השגחה ועוד ועוד אבל מובן שבשעת הדחק גם על זה יש לוותר, ובפרט שבודאי ישנו טלפון שאז אין הריחוק במקום מונע כ"כ.

במ"ש אודות כתות נוספות בהנוגע להיי סקול, הרי בעצמו מסיים שתעמוד על סדר היום בעוד שלש שנים, ובכללות הגישה שלו נכונה היא, ז. א. להוסיף רק כתות אלו שבהם מסתיים הלימוד הכרחי ע"פ חוקי המדינה מש[א"כ] הכתות שלאחרי זה, ושכפי כתבו קשור זה בהוצאות גדולות, ובפרט שאין ידוע כמה ירצו להמשיך לימודם אלו כשאין החוק מכריחם על זה.

בודאי עושים תכנית איך לנצל חדש כסלו והמועדים, אשר בו כדבעי להחזקת והפצת עניני חב"ד אשר במעלבורן ומוסדות חינוך חב"ד ביחוד.
