Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 18 MarCheshvan* and the one preceding it, along with its contents. It seems that I did not sufficiently clarify my remarks when I spoke to you about a compendium of Chabad customs (see note 2). I thought it was self-evident.

I was referring to the compilation of customs mentioned in the booklets (see note 3), in the Machzor* (see note 4), citing only those practices that present a novel aspect and that are specific to Chabad chassidim* — in particular, elements that are not very well known.

It is clear that, for now, in the absence of any material prepared for publication, one cannot envision a more elaborate compendium, as you apparently envisioned in your program. Nevertheless, I do not dismiss this project. However, time is needed and several preparations must be made to assemble the material.

According to my conception, which I conveyed to you, several paragraphs appearing in the pages you enclosed — in particular the first and the second — have no place in this compendium of customs.

Another point concerns the first paragraph, based on what the Kuntres HaTefillah* (see note 5) states. It applies to Tikkun Chatzos* (see note 6) and is found in its chapter 11, beginning at the end of page 24. Certainly, one may question whether to publish what is stated in this Kuntres HaTefillah*. Nevertheless, in a compendium of customs whose objective is practical action, one cannot print the opposite of what is stated therein.

במענה על מכתבו מח"י מ"ח והקודם לו, עם המוסגר בהם, והנה כנראה אשר לא בארתי כוונתי כשדברתי עמו ע"ד ליקוט מנהגי חב"ד, כי אמרתי בלבי אשר מעצמו מובן.

וכוונתי היתה על דרך לקוט המנהגים שבקונטרסים, מחזור השלם שבאו שם רק המנהגים שיש בהם חידוש ומיוחדים בהם אנ"ש, ובעיקר הענינים שאינם מפורסמים כ"כ, כי מובן שלע"ע ומבלי כל חומר מוכן עדיין, אין הזמן גרמא לקובץ יותר שלם, אשר כנראה אליו נתכווין בתכנית שלו, אף שאיני מתיאש מזה, ורק שדרוש זמן וכמה הכנות לאסיפת חומר.

ע"פ כוונתי האמורה, כמה מהסעיפים שבעליו המצורפים וכמו מתחיל מסעיף א' ב' כו' אין מקומם בליקוט מנהגים כזה, [נקודה נוספת בהנוגע לסעיף א' ע"פ המבואר בקונטרס התפלה בהנוגע לענין תיקון חצות בפרק י"א (סוף עמוד כ"ד ואילך) שאף שצ"ע אם יש לפרסם האמור בקונטרס התפלה, אבל לאידך גיסא בקובץ מנהגים בהנוגע לפועל אין להדפיס הפכו]...
