To the young man David Tzvi (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, in which you pose questions regarding the words of the Alter Rebbe* in the first chapter of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*:
A) One who transgresses a positive commandment and subsequently achieves teshuvah* nevertheless loses the light (see note 2).
The text itself cites the source of this statement: "What is the transgression… (see note 3)." Of course, this does not refer to teshuvah* at its highest level. In fact, there does indeed exist a form of teshuvah* that can achieve this (see note 4).
You should consult, on this matter, what the Tanya* states at the end of chapter 7.
B) One who violates a prohibition does not completely eliminate its trace through his teshuvah*.
I am surprised by this formulation, for it is not precise. You should consult the exact explanation on this subject given in Derech Mitzvosecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, on the mitzvah* of confession and teshuvah*.
You will thereby appreciate what is stated in the revealed dimension of the Torah* regarding the importance of confession.
With blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary
