Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 13 Cheshvan*, in which you tell me that you proposed to the administration of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* in Lod to introduce modifications to the study program (see note 1). You present your reasons for this.

You know how cautious one must be when seeking to modify a program that has proven itself over many years, on the basis of which hundreds, even thousands of students have been educated, and which has demonstrated how sound it is — achieving its objective of forming students who are wholesome, inwardly and outwardly, and protecting them from the unusual winds blowing upon the world.

This is true for all students, and how much more so for those who have distinguished themselves in their studies and achieved above-average success. Indeed, it is not for human beings to conduct experiments, to observe whether changes are successful, whether they bring effective benefit or not.

Moreover, in general, a modification is more likely to produce loss than gain. For one thereby connects the student not only with the subject matter studied, but also with a new environment — books, but also people (see note 2) — whose conceptions oppose, to a certain degree, the worldview that one wishes to impart to the students.

To all this, yet another point must be added. When such a modification is introduced into the Yeshivah's* program, one grants an endorsement to that study and to everything that follows from it. You must understand what this means.

I do not know you personally, but I will offer you advice and I hope you will accept it. As long as your son can remain in the tent of Torah* and wholesome fear of Heaven, as long as he continues his studies at the Yeshivah*, one should not temper the joy of his heart by having him devote a portion of his time to new and diverse subjects. This is not merely a matter of losing a few hours of sacred study, but rather of introducing a student into another world (see note 3).

You say that the demands of this world make certain knowledge indispensable. Yet these are unfortunately absorbed far more easily than sacred studies. After leaving the Yeshivah*, after having sufficiently strengthened himself against harmful influences, he will therefore be able, in a short time and with ease, to acquire all the knowledge that is truly useful for establishing himself and earning a livelihood, in the most literal sense.

May Hashem grant that you derive from all your children genuine satisfaction — that is to say, traditional Jewish satisfaction.

With blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary
