Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 17 MarCheshvan*, with its contents.
At an auspicious moment, I will mention your name, that of your wife, and those of all the people you mention, near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, of blessed memory.
You tell me that you are teaching Gemara* to an eleven-year-old girl, and you express the doubts you have on this subject — whether such study is well-founded. If it is possible, and easy, for this teaching to focus on passages related to practical action, such study indeed falls within the scope of what is incumbent upon women, according to the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of chapter 1, which you should consult.
These tractates and passages related to practical action are very numerous. Moreover, in this case, your student will soon reach the age of acceptance of the mitzvos* — that of twelve, Bas Mitzvah*.
I am surprised that in the description of the teaching you give to this man, you make no mention of Chassidus*. And if he himself does not feel the need for it, this shows even more clearly how much he needs it. This is self-evident.
Moreover, I hope that this is not the case — that he does indeed feel the need — since this man spent some time at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. But he no doubt says to himself that you study together for only a short time, and that this study must therefore be directed in the manner you describe, without including Chassidus*.
You will therefore explain to him the concept of the "measure of salt" — placed in the barn to preserve the wheat from rotting — which is explained in the Kuntres Eitz HaChaim* of the Rebbe Rashab*, on the importance of Torah study. Without doubt, he will readily agree to devote a moment of your joint study to Chassidus*.
May Hashem grant that you give me good news of all this.
May Hashem grant that the pregnancy of your wife go well, that it be easy, and that she have, at the proper time, an easy birth of a healthy child.
With my blessing,
