Blessings and greetings (this letter is addressed to a young woman),
I am responding to your letter of 11 MarCheshvan*, in which you describe the course of events regarding your marriage and the relations that have been established between you and your husband, from whom you wish to obtain a divorce. In the course of your discussions, you decided to apply to the rabbinical court in order to... You conclude by stating that you are currently fighting against him and against the entire family.
It is, of course, difficult to formulate an opinion on the basis of the arguments of only one party. Indeed, a general rule has been stated, applying to each and every person, including the most perfect, according to which: "A person is close to himself" — and is therefore not objective regarding his own affairs.
You have made the decision to apply to the rabbinical court — that is, I am convinced, to competent and experienced Rabbanim*. Thus, both parties will be able to present their arguments and hear the opinion of men who are truly objective.
For all that, I hasten to formulate the following remarks regarding your letter:
A) You say that you are fighting against him and against the entire family, but one may think that you are also fighting against yourself. Indeed, family life is indispensable. Every hasty, injudicious step has a negative effect on both sides and, very often, even more clearly on the one who initiated it than on the other party.
Of course, I am not expressing any opinion on the problem posed and on the manner of resolving it, for, as I said, I have heard the arguments of only one party. I simply wish to share my concern with you, for it seems that you are striving to aggravate the relations in order to bring about the clarification and the final decision as quickly as possible. Now, in such a case, a quick solution is very often not the best and most effective one.
B) Another point is perhaps even more important. You tell me that you are appearing before the court in order to obtain a divorce, which means that you do not envision any other solution. Now, you will agree that someone who is not involved can express a much more objective opinion than those who are directly concerned.
It is therefore not right to appear before the court considering the final decision as already established, before even having consulted it on the matter.
C) I am surprised by the description you give of your actions and the conduct you have adopted. You are observant and you have received a religious education. You are making a religious argument in this case, while your attitude goes against all of that and your stated objective is to sever the relationship — to divorce.
It is surely unnecessary to remind you that conduct in conformity with the will of our Torah*, Torah* of life, cannot be the object of commerce and cannot be used to exert pressure. Such conduct has an intrinsic value and a fundamental role in the relationship between a person and the Creator, Who directs him.
By adopting an attitude conforming to the teachings of the One Who gives the Torah*, one receives His blessings, which also include sound reasoning, good understanding, and an accurate assessment of the situation one faces. One can then make the right decisions and know true happiness.
We say three times daily in prayer that the beginning of the expression of human needs is: "Grant us wisdom, understanding, and knowledge." Now, from a positive formulation one can deduce the negative — which means, in this case, that the opposite attitude weakens the relationship between a person and his Creator, contradicts all that has just been said, and removes what is essential and vital at all times, particularly when one must resolve complicated and essential questions.
I am sending you this letter by express, even before responding to the letters I received before yours, in the hope that these few lines — few in relation to the importance of the subject — will lead you to meditate once more, on the basis of these three points, and to reconsider your position.
Above all, you will adopt conduct conforming to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life. I would like you to confirm to me that this hope is indeed well-founded.
With my blessing that Hashem, extending His Providence to each and every person, guide you on the right path, that of true good,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
