Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Tishrei*. I read with pleasure that with the beginning of the new year, you have adopted, for your prayer, the luminous nusach* of the Alter Rebbe* — that of the Arizal*. May Hashem grant that it be answered, among all the prayers of Israel.

The beginning of the intermediate blessings of the Amidah*, which allow one to express the needs of a person, is: "Grant us wisdom, understanding, and knowledge" — Chochmah*, Binah*, and Da'as*, whose initials spell Chabad*. The positive effect of this change of nusach* will therefore be felt in all other domains, in the requests that are formulated subsequently in the Amidah*. May Hashem grant that there not be too many difficulties and veils in this matter.

You ask me what you should do on Shabbos* and festivals when you go to your synagogue, where a different nusach* is in use.

There is a question in this matter only if you must lead the prayer yourself, as the prayer leader. On the other hand, if you pray individually, it is clear that you must maintain your own nusach*. As you know, we have concrete precedents in this matter, observed in previous generations (see letters 4350, 5101, and 5165). The Rebbe* notes: Responsa Meishiv Davar, chapter 17; Responsa Maharam Schick, Orach Chaim* section, chapter 43 — against the view of the Pe'as HaShulchan, law 1010; the Responsa of the Chasam Sofer*, Orach Chaim* section, chapter 15, specify that the master of the Chasam Sofer*, Rav Nosson Adler, led the service using the Arizal* nusach* even though the entire congregation followed the Ashkenaz nusach*. Of course, the same applies to the reading of VeShamru* — the paragraph "And the children of Israel shall observe the Shabbos*," which is inserted in the Friday evening prayer before the Amidah* according to all nuschaos except that of the Arizal*.

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
