To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shmuel (Rav S. Rappoport, inspector of the Jewish Agency),
Greetings and blessings,
Your letter of 14 Tishrei* was a pleasant surprise for me. And this surprise was increased when I noted your interest in Kfar Chabad*. Without doubt, this interest will lead you to contribute to its strengthening and development.
I have taken note, with particular attention, of the proposal you formulate in this letter — that Kfar Chabad* join the settlement association, enabling group acquisitions and sales of national lands (see also letter 5237). What you write and what is said between the lines demonstrate that you appreciate the difficulty of the stakes, particularly in the Holy Land, where every matter receives seventy different interpretations, provided one can give it the imprint of a political party. It seems, in this case, that this proposal is known in various circles and that it has aroused reactions of the kind that you yourself wish to set aside.
Of course, I am examining this proposal despite all that, and I will contact the chassidim* of the Kfar on this subject.
I hope that in the future you will continue to concretely manifest your interest in the Kfar and, more generally, in Chabad* in the Holy Land. You say in your letter that you are writing to me without having been asked to do so. It is clear that you need not apologize for this — on the contrary.
With my respects and my blessing,
You cite in your letter the example of Rabbi Meir, who "found a pomegranate, ate the pulp, and threw away the peel" — the teaching of Elisha ben Avuyah, "the Other" (Chagigah* 15b). All chassidim* know the discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in which he states that a Jew must make himself master of the portion of the world entrusted to him by Divine Providence, in order to refine it, transform it, and illuminate it.
And the Rebbe* also specified that the master of a domain is one who knows how to put to use every element constituting it, for the good of that domain.
This teaching is based on one of the fundamental principles of Chassidus*, according to which every element contains a spark of Divinity. That is why one must always put into practice the precept: "In all your ways, know Him" (Mishlei* 3:6).
In light of all this, I am convinced that you will not even throw away the peel. You will also put it to use so that light prevails over darkness, spirituality over matter, spirit over form.
Of course, this does not concern the three forces of evil — also called kelipos*, "husks" — which have no good in them at all. It is otherwise, however, for the peel of the pomegranate. Certainly, it is not edible. For all that, it can have various uses, good and beneficial. The same applies to the matter under discussion.
