To the Rav*, the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Mordechai Dov (Rav M.D. Telishevski, of Brooklyn; see letter 4685),
Greetings and blessings,
You have informed me that you have arrived safely at your destination — the place where you are to collect funds for the yeshivah* — and I send you my response. You surely still have in mind what we discussed before your journey. Your actions must be optimistic and joyful, which will strengthen not only the moral sowing — the spreading of Torah* values — but also the material harvest — the collection of funds for the yeshivah*.
You ask me how to give tzedakah* in a manner consistent with what is stated in the Iggeres HaKodesh* — that is, in multiple installments. This is explained by the Levushei Srad*, cited by the Tzemach Tzedek* and now printed in the Chassidic discourse entitled "In order to understand how each coin of tzedakah* accumulates to constitute an important sum." The Levushei Srad* is not available and I therefore reproduce below what it says on this subject.
Obviously, I add that the Alter Rebbe* and what he says in Iggeres HaKodesh* are not intended to diminish but, on the contrary, to add. This means that if one has decided to give a certain sum, one should not delay the gift in order to realize it in multiple installments. In fact, this text says that if one has a coin to give, one should not wait to have others before giving it. Indeed, it is important to give this tzedakah* in multiple installments. All of this is self-evident.
With my blessing of success,
The Levushei Srad*, chapter 113, states:
"A person must strengthen himself in the giving of tzedakah*. He shall have a specific purse for this purpose. The Sages say that it is preferable to give it in multiple installments rather than a certain sum in a single time.
Consequently, a person shall place, at each time, a coin in this tzedakah* purse. He shall do so at every moment, according to his nature and his means. Thus, what he gives throughout the day will constitute a large sum.
He shall do all of this for the Name of Hashem. When he encounters someone who must receive tzedakah*, he shall give to him from this purse, according to what the Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 251, paragraph 9, and the Knesses Yisrael*, chapter 17, explain."
