To the leaders of the Chabad* Youth Association, may Hashem grant them long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I am surprised and pained by your especially long silence. After an inquiry on my part, through indirect means, it seems that the reason is the absence of activities in the appropriate manner. It is clear that nothing is being added to the "routine" activities.

I said that I was "pained" and, in fact, this term is not exact. It does not fully describe the reality. Young people are full of eagerness and, for the time being, are not subject to the constraints of earning a livelihood. This should strengthen, encourage, and inspire urgency. Yet nothing is being done! What then will become of those who must actually earn their livelihood — who "carry their millstone on their neck"?

This applies to individuals who have already had the merit of seeing the luminaries of Chassidus* and all that it encompasses, at least up to a certain point. Chassidus* explains in the clearest way the necessity of eagerness, of acting in the best way in everything concerning the Torah* and the mitzvos*. All of this is not a mere supplement, but the means of verifying whether one is the servant of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, or someone who thinks he is beholden to no one, who merely asks what obligation he must discharge, considers it a chore, and then returns to his independence, considering that he has done his duty.

Obviously, when one acts in this latter manner, one thinks one needs to be encouraged, flattered, congratulated. Moreover, sometimes this is sufficient to achieve success. Other times, it is still not enough to motivate action.

From those who adopt such an attitude, one can understand what should be done by individuals who, for the time being, have not yet had the merit of receiving the light of Chassidus*, the strength instilled by its masters, from the Baal Shem Tov* to my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, of blessed memory.

It is self-evident that if every Jew, among all of Israel, must, throughout the year, fill each of his days with true content and not leave them empty, how much more is this the case during Tishrei*, the seventh month, sated with every good — a general good for the entire year. If one does not take advantage of these days, if one does not do so fully, one can understand what will result for the rest of the year.

It is true that I have received some newspaper clippings about your campaign of the four species during the festival of Sukkos*, but it appears that this was done on a reduced scale, that the full necessary infrastructure was not put in place. And, in any event, this is not the entirety of the mission that Divine Providence has entrusted to the youth of the Chabad* Association. Moreover, it is only a very small part of it, even though this mitzvah*, like every other, includes within it all the mitzvos* and instills an increased strength to fulfill them, whether they be simpler or more decisive.

Is this, as the leadership of the Chabad* Youth Association understands it, the content of the injunction: "And Yaakov advanced on his way" (Bereishis* 32:2)? Advancing at this pace, when will we reach the objective that Divine Providence has assigned to us, for which it demands effort on our part?

Avodah* — effort — has the same etymology as ivud oros* — the tanning of hides. It is this effort that allows one to serve Hashem, to do so at the most elevated level, to become His "faithful servant."

I send you my blessing to give good news of all this, after having meditated in the appropriate manner upon the role of the Jewish person on earth, particularly when he belongs to the community of chassidim*, for whom our holy masters gave of themselves — not only during their physical lives but also after their souls returned on high, as explained in the letters of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, and in other texts as well.

Our Sages also allude to all of this in Tractate Sotah* 13b and in the words of the Tosafos* at the end of that chapter. They say that "the first redeemer will be the last redeemer" — Moshe*, the "faithful shepherd," who "did not die" and continues his mission in the same way. A similar explanation is found in Midrash* Bamidbar Rabbah* and Tanchuma*, Parshas* Chukas, on the verse: "the leaders of the people" — according to which a faithful shepherd remains attached to his flock even after his passing.

In anticipation of your good news,
