Blessings and greetings (this letter is addressed to a woman),
I have been surprised, throughout all this time, not to have had any news from you, in general, and in particular, regarding the manner in which you use your abilities to strengthen Judaism and spread it. Such is the true mission of each and every person, man and woman, in our generation — an "ember saved from the fire" (after the Shoah*).
It is even more astonishing to see that your son, may he be granted long life, not only does not draw closer to the goal toward which he must strive, but goes, on the contrary, in the opposite direction. Instead of using the strength of character that he inherited from his fathers and ancestors, he uses it to show that he does not accept the influence of all his true friends, that he can direct himself toward other paths, even if they are tortuous.
In recent times, he has been able to observe various miracles that Divine Providence has accomplished for him. Yet he is ashamed to reveal his true and deep connection with all that is holy to us. It seems that the reason is the following: he is afraid that someone will say that he is drawn by his origins.
In such a case, if he heard from you the appropriate words, with the necessary determination and in the formulation that is called for, it is certain that he would be encouraged and that he would publicly display what he is deep down — what he has received as an inheritance — the point of Chassidus* that penetrates all the forces of a person, but which remains hidden so long as it is not revealed by the person himself.
I do not know precisely what your relations and connections with him are, but in any event, this is not the time to worry about all that, for what is at stake is the soul of your son and what his life will be in the future.
With my blessing for giving good news of this and of the other points mentioned in my letter, on this occasion.
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
