Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 MarCheshvan*, in which you describe your study program. You conclude by noting that certain explanations are difficult, for example the words of the Rebbe* — the Alter Rebbe* — in the Torah Or*, in Parshas* Chayei Sarah.

You surely know that an explanation by the Tzemach Tzedek* on this subject has been published, appearing in the appendices of the Torah Or*, published by Kehot*. In general, in such cases, when one encounters a difficult passage, it is clear that one must not skip it. One must study it at least superficially and, if even that is not possible, one must at least read the words.

As with everything belonging to the inner dimension of the Torah*, one can find an allusion to this in the revealed part of the Torah*, namely the statement of our Sages in Tractate Megillah* 18a: "Do we ourselves possess the knowledge...?" — that is, does one deeply understand the text of the Torah* that one studies? — "In truth, it is a mitzvah* to read."

במענה על מכתבה מה' חשון, בו כותבת על אשר אירע לה בהלידה ל"ע ול"ע.

וצריכה היא לברר אם בהשידוך שלהם לא היתה פגיעה בכבוד בן או בת ישראל, זאת אומרת שהיו תנאים עם אחר-ת וכיו"ב, ואחר כך חזרו בהם מבלי קבלת מחילה כדבעי וכו', ואם כן הוא צריך לסדר עתה בקשת מחילה מהם או בפני עשרה מישראל, כן מובן ופשוט שצריך לדקדק בשמירת חוקי ודיני טהרת המשפחה, וכן לבדוק את התפילין של הבעל שי' ואת המזוזות בדירתם, ונוסף על שבודאי נוהגת במנהג בנות ישראל הכשרות להפריש לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת וערב יום טוב, הנה תפריש גם כן איזה פרוטות לצדקה בכל יום חול של שני וחמישי בשבוע, ונכון יהי' לבה בטוח בבורא עולם ומנהיגו אשר ימלא משאלות לבבם לטובה בזחו"ק.
