To the attention of Professor Avraham Yitzchak (Prof. A.I. Katz; see letter 4209) HaKohen,

Greetings and blessings,

I received, in its time, your letter, composed before your journey. I did not respond to it, not knowing when you would return. Thus my response has been delayed until now. Shortly, we will meet and I will therefore touch only briefly upon the content of your letter (see also letter 4209 on this subject).

You ask me about the prohibition of marrying the Nesinim* — whom King David did not accept into Judaism and whom he set apart as drawers of water and hewers of wood, so that they would not be integrated into the people of Israel. You say that according to certain opinions, this prohibition derives from the application of the verse: "for he will turn away your son."

What is involved here is searching for the source of the claim made in the Quran, written by someone who was ignorant in matters of Judaism and, in this regard, received from other people only a few disjointed pieces of knowledge. The contradictions found in the Quran allow one to establish this.

It follows that the sources of this knowledge must be simple and easy to establish. In this case, all of this — what concerns the Nesinim* — is clearly stated, for example in Malachi*. As I noted in my letter, I therefore do not see why one should imagine that he is discussing the opinion of the early Sages or even those of the Gemara* and that he is adjudicating their discussions.

Concerning the fast of Ramadan, I am not ashamed to say that I am learning that it lasts forty days. I had always thought it was thirty, according to the length of the month.

Our latest publications have been sent to you under separate cover. Without doubt, they will be of interest to you.

שלום וברכה!

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מה' חשון עם המוסגר בו, לאחרי השתיקה וההפסק הכי ארוך, וכנראה גם ממכתבו זה הנה לבד ענין... אינו מתעסק בעניני חב"ד, ומובן אשר הנהגה כזו - ואף שלצערי כמה מאנ"ש באה"ק ת"ו אוחזים בה - אין לה מקום כלל, לא רק בשכל דקדושה אלא גם בשכל הבריא האנושי, אף שמבין אני כל האמתלאות שבדבר שאין פב"פ משתף פעולה כו' וכו', וכמבואר בכמה שיחות שאמתלאות כעין אלו יש להם מקום בהנוגע לשכר ועונש, אבל פשוט שאין מוסיפין דבר בהנוגע להענינים להחזקתם ועאכו"כ להתפתחותם, ופשיטא ג"כ שאף שענין... נעלה ביותר וביותר והעוסק במצוה פטור וכו', אבל בלי ספק אשר כמה שעות ביום שפנוי מעסק מצוה זו ומחפשים ומתעסקים בכמה ענינים וכרמי שלי לא נטרתי;

ויה"ר שלא יהיו דברי דברים בטלים וכקול קורא במדבר וסו"ס יפעלו פעולתם.

בברכה,

בשם כ"ק אדמו"ר שליט " א
