Greetings and blessings*,
I am taking advantage of the present letter, written on the day when Tachanun* is said for the first time after several weeks (see note 1), to note a Chassidic* story that I have recalled. The Chassid*, great Rav* and Tzaddik*, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch, did not say the Psalm "Al Neharos*" that precedes the Grace After Meals* (see note 2), even on these days. He explained that Tachanun* is itself a guest, in whose honor one may say the "Shir HaMa'alos*" (see note 3).
This Chassidic* story, like all others, conveys a teaching, which is the following. The recitation of Tachanun*, the confession — "we have sinned" — is also a source of joy for one who serves Hashem, if he meditates on His great Kindness in granting man the possibility of rectifying his past.
Moreover, this is not so only for one's behavior in the future. It is also the means of uprooting the past and obtaining, in the expression of our Sages, "the transformation of intentionally committed sins into merits."
With my blessing* of good health and success in educating Jewish children in sacred values,
Notes:
(1) Since the eve of Yom Kippur*.
(2) On a weekday when Tachanun* is said.
(3) The Psalm that replaces "Al Neharos*" when Tachanun* is not said.
